Travel should be exciting, but sometimes it can feel like it\u2019s just another set of tasks and to do\u2019s. With flights to track, hotels to book, directions to navigate, it\u2019s as if the logistics are taking over the adventure. <\/p>\n

Thankfully, a growing lineup of travel apps have emerged to ensure every part of your journey \u2013 from pre-planning to active exploring \u2013 flows smoothly, leaving you free to actually enjoy the trip you\u2019re on.<\/p>\n

Getting there<\/p>\n

When it comes to booking flights, travel experts often rely on Google Flights<\/a> and Skyscanner<\/a>, which both track the best deals and send you notifications when prices change. And for when you\u2019re en route? There\u2019s CanBorder<\/a>, which provides estimated wait times at select ports of entry in Canada and the U.S., as well as Flighty<\/a>, which tracks flight delays, cancellations, strikes and more. <\/p>\n

\u201cI consistently get updates faster than I do from the airline apps themselves,\u201d says Jordana Manchester, a travel advisor with Storied Lands Travel in Squamish, B.C. \u201cMore than once, I\u2019ve been standing in line to board and received a delay alert before it was even announced.\u201d <\/p>\n

Pre-trip prep<\/p>\n

While social media loves a viral packing hack<\/a>, Manchester \u2013 who describes herself as \u201cthe world\u2019s worst overpacker\u201d \u2013 appreciates a good app like PackPoint<\/a> to keep her organized. <\/p>\n

\u201cI love the simplicity,\u201d she says. \u201cJust plug in your destination, the time of year you\u2019re travelling, the types of activities you\u2019ll be participating in \u2013 and it will build you a pretty slick packing list. It\u2019s fully customizable so if you happen to have access to laundry, it will take that into account.\u201d <\/p>\n

In terms of making your itinerary, there are certainly many options to choose from. Manchester likes TripIT<\/a>, whereas Samantha Delaney, a Toronto-based legal tech senior consultant and adjunct professor, who travelled to international destinations including Mexico, France and Costa Rica last year, is a big fan of Wanderlog<\/a>. \u201cYou can upload plane tickets, car rentals and hotel reservations, making it easy to visualize your whole journey in one place,\u201d she says. \u201c[I can] generate a day-by-day map of my entire trip using all of the information that you input, which is a huge time saver.\u201d<\/p>\n

On the go<\/p>\n

What about while you\u2019re trying to find your way around once you arrive? There\u2019s Google Maps, of course, but Manchester recommends Waze<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\u201cWaze has a super fun interface which makes getting around world cities and communities sort of like a game,\u201d she says. \u201cMy eight-year-old loves it!\u201d <\/p>\n

Manchester is fond of the app because it\u2019s community-built and offers real-time updates, which is great for road-tripping and trying to avoid rush hour, accidents or major construction. <\/p>\n

As for managing finances while travelling with friends or family, Delaney is keen on Splitwise<\/a>, which simplifies tracking and settling shared expenses as it helps \u201cavoid the awkwardness of splitting bills at restaurants or for shared reservations.\u201d And for international travel, you\u2019re able to use the currency of that country. <\/p>\n

\u201cAt the end of the trip, Splitwise simplifies group debts by calculating who owes what using the fewest possible transfers,\u201d Delaney says. \u201cI even use the pro version to remove daily expense limits. <\/p>\n

\u201dManchester also praises AccessNow<\/a>, a Canadian-founded crowdsourced platform that allows travellers to find, rate and share information on how accessible certain hotels, restaurants, stores, parks and trails are. \u201cI work with several travellers living with various hidden and visible disabilities,\u201d she says. \u201c[The app] helps my travellers make informed decisions about their trip.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other expert suggestions include e-sim purveyor Airalo<\/a>, so you can use your phone abroad, Headout<\/a> for last-minute tickets in big cities and Airbnb Experiences<\/a> for finding unique activities hosted by locals.<\/p>\n
