\n\tEmerald Fennell<\/a>\u2019s \u201cWuthering Heights<\/a>\u201d has been unveiled to members of the film press ahead of its Feb. 13 release, and first reactions are calling the steamy literary romance a \u201cbodice-ripping crowd-pleaser\u201d that is \u201cdestined to be a massive hit for Warner Bros.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tCritic Courtney Howard posted a glowing review on X, calling Fennell\u2019s latest \u201ca god-tier new classic.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIntoxicating, transcendent, tantalizing, bewitching, lust worthy, hypnotic,\u201d Howard wrote<\/a>. \u201cExpertly captures the breathtaking ache & essence of desire. [Linus] Sandgren\u2019s cinematography, spellbinding. [Suzie] Davies\u2019 production design, sublime.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tVariety senior artisans editor Jazz Tangacy also praised the film on X. She called \u201cWuthering Heights\u201d a \u201cscorching hot twisted tale\u201d and lauded the chemistry between stars Margot Robbie<\/a> and Jacob Elordi<\/a> as \u201ca whole other level of HOT!\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cOnly Emerald could take a classic, turn it on its head, make you fall completely in lust, and then utterly destroy your soul,\u201d she wrote<\/a>. \u201cAn exquisite spectacle of craftsmanship that left me salivating over the costumes, cinematography and production design. \n\tEntertainment writer Scott Menzel smelled box office success for \u201cWuthering Heights.\u201d He wrote on X that the erotic drama is \u201cdestined to be a massive hit for Warner Bros.\u201d and will establish director Fennell as \u201cone of the most in-demand filmmakers working today.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cA breathtaking visual work of art, the film feels like it will be a major awards contender, particularly in cinematography, costume design, production design, and score,\u201d Menzel wrote<\/a>. \u201cAnd if you already thought Jacob Elordi was the next big thing after \u2018Euphoria,\u2019 \u2018Saltburn,\u2019 and \u2018Frankenstein,\u2019 just wait until you see him here. The sexual tension and chemistry between Margot Robbie and Elordi is so intense you can practically cut it with a knife.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIndieWire editor at large Anne Thompson also predicted commercial glory for \u201cWuthering Heights.\u201d She wrote on X<\/a>, \u201c\u2018Wuthering Heights\u2019 will open well and soar at the box office. It\u2019s a rip-roaring, bodice-ripping crowd-pleaser. Both Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie will come out ahead. Audiences will fall for Emerald Fennell\u2019s garish visuals and unrestrained direction. Everything is BIG.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBased on the 1847 novel by Emily Bront\u00eb, the film follows the deliciously forbidden romance between Robbie\u2019s Cathy, a wealthy 19th-century patrician, and Elordi\u2019s Heathcliff, a hunky high-society pariah who, after Cathy swears her heart to another, returns to Wuthering Heights to fight for her love. Alongside Robbie and Elordi, the film stars Hong Chau, Alison Oliver, Shazad Latif, Martin Clunes and Ewan Mitchell. The film also features original music from pop superstar Charli xcx.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWuthering Heights\u201d was first, and most famously, adapted to film by master director William Wyler in 1939, with Merle Oberon and Laurence Olivier in the starring roles. In 2011, \u201cFish Tank\u201d director Andrea Arnold helmed another version starring Kaya Scodelario and James Howson. There was also a 1970 rendition starring Anna Calder-Marshall and Timothy Dalton, a 1992 adaptation with Juliette Binoche and Ralph Fiennes and an ITV mini-series with Charlotte Riley and Tom Hardy.<\/p>\n

\n\tFennell is a self-proclaimed superfan of the source material, telling a panel at the Bront\u00eb Women\u2019s Writing Festival in England in September that she\u2019d \u201cbe furious\u201d if she wasn\u2019t the director to bring \u201cWuthering Heights\u201d into the modern age. She added that she wants her version to make audiences feel how she felt reading \u201cWuthering Heights\u201d for the first time.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI wanted to make something that made me feel like I felt when I first read it, which means that it\u2019s an emotional response to something,\u201d Fennell said<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s, like, primal, sexual.\u201d<\/p>\n
