In his first appearance of 2026, the world No. 1 picked up right where he left off last year, winning by four shots at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pgatour.com\/leaderboard\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.pgatour.com\/leaderboard\">The American Express<\/a> at La Quinta Country Club in California. In the process, Scheffler also consigned one online doubter to eating Wendy\u2019s chili, and only Wendy\u2019s chili, for an entire month.<\/p>\n<p>A confident guarantee that aged poorly<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The tale is one of self-inflicted punishment from Larry Shea, who owns Tom &amp; Marty\u2019s Town House in Binghamton, New York. It may be \u201cthe best bar in America,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/tomandmartys\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"https:\/\/x.com\/tomandmartys\">its X account<\/a>, but the platform is also used to offer running commentary on golf, as well as player picks. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Unfortunately for Shea, not all of those picks have been on the mark of late.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">On Thursday, the opening day of the tournament, Scheffler posted six birdies in his first nine holes. Larry, foolishly, saw that as a sign there was no way Scheffler was winning on his first start of the year.<\/p>\n<p>A self-inflicted punishment<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cScheffler isn\u2019t winning folks,\u201d he initially posted. \u201cHe never does when he starts this hot. I guarantee it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">As if that were not reckless enough, he doubled down on the claim in spectacular fashion 20 minutes later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIf Scottie Scheffler wins this week I will only eat Wendy\u2019s chili for a month. It\u2019s not happening folks. ZERO chance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The internet knew what was coming<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The rest, as they say, is history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Even <a href=\"https:\/\/dudewipes.com\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/dudewipes.com\/\">Dude Wipes<\/a>, a brand that makes flushable personal hygiene wipes designed for men, saw it coming from a mile away, replying: \u201cYou\u2019re gonna need us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Fast forward a little more than three days and, sure enough, Scheffler bagged his first victory of 2026 in typically comfortable fashion, finishing four shots ahead of the chasing pack at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lqcc.org\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.lqcc.org\/\">La Quinta.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A man of his word, armed with chili<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Shea does, at least, appear to have owned his mistake and is embracing the challenge with humor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI am a man of my word,\u201d Larry said in a video posted on X. \u201cNo excuses, I was wrong. Congratulations, Scottie Scheffler, which means until February 25, 7 p.m., the only thing I\u2019m going to be eating for breakfast, lunch and dinner is Wendy\u2019s chili.
