\n\tFollowing Joaquin Phoenix\u2019s exit <\/a>last year, Todd Haynes<\/a>\u2019 subversive love story\u00a0\u201cDe Noche\u201d <\/a>is back on track with Pedro Pascal<\/a> officially set to play a hard-boiled detective opposite Danny Ramirez as his younger lover. Shooting will start next month.<\/p>\n

\n\tMK2 Films, the French indie banner behind Joachim Trier\u2019s \u201cSentimental Value\u201d and Kleber Mendon\u00e7a Filho\u2019s \u201cThe Secret Agent,\u201d is financing the film as well as handling international sales. The Paris-based company is also co-repping domestic rights with Cinetic Media. Killer Films\u2019 Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler are producing.<\/p>\n

\n\tHaynes penned the screenplay with longtime collaborator Jon Raymond. The story, which echoes classic noirs like\u00a0\u201cChinatown,\u201d charts the passionate and unexpected love affair between a cop (Pascal) and a boarding school teacher (Ramirez) in 1930s Los Angeles, when the city is overtaken by corruption and the world is on the brink of war. The two men become targets of the city\u2019s corrupt political machine and are forced to flee to Mexico.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe project marks Pascal\u2019s first collaboration with Haynes. The actor has been balancing out studio blockbusters such as Marvel\u2019s \u201cThe Fantastic Four: First Steps\u201d with prestige indies like A24\u2019s \u201cMaterialists\u201d and \u201cEddington.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHaynes, whose last film \u201cMay December\u201d earned an Oscar nomination for best screenplay, said: \u201cThis story, with Pedro Pascal and Danny Ramirez in the two leads, arises out of an era \u2014 all too relevant to our own \u2014 of domestic corruption, racial exploitation and global terror.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cBut it emerges as a testament to the inexplicable powers of desire and love to survive and overcome even the most crippling of human barriers,\u201d added Haynes, who is also an outspoken activist.<\/p>\n

Fionnuala Jamison, managing director of MK2 Films, said: \u201cFew filmmakers connect with audiences as strongly as Todd Haynes.\u201d Jamison, who will kick off sales on the project at the European Film Market in Berlin, added that Haynes\u2019 films \u201csuch as\u00a0\u2018Carol\u2019 and\u00a0\u2018Far from Heaven\u2019\u00a0have left a lasting emotional impact worldwide. \u2018De Noche\u2019\u00a0carries that same power, and with Killer Films and a remarkable cast led by Pedro Pascal, it is a stand-out project we are proud to be a part of and share with buyers.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tPaloma Negra Films and MK2 are also producing with Jonathan Montepare and Steven Demmler, in association with Cinetic Media. IPR.VC is financing as part of their long-term partnership with MK2, alongside Yggdrasil, L\u00e9ger Production, Mid March, Pluto and Leaf Entertainment.<\/p>\n

\n\tMK2 Films<\/a> will also be attending the Berlinale with Korn\u00e9l Mundrucz\u00f3\u2019s \u201cAt the Sea\u201d starring Oscar-nominated\u00a0Amy Adams<\/a>, which will world premiere in competition.
