{"id":448738,"date":"2026-02-04T15:52:07","date_gmt":"2026-02-04T15:52:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/448738\/"},"modified":"2026-02-04T15:52:07","modified_gmt":"2026-02-04T15:52:07","slug":"tennessee-qb-joey-aguilar-granted-temporary-restraining-order-against-ncaa-eligibility-rules","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/448738\/","title":{"rendered":"Tennessee QB Joey Aguilar granted temporary restraining order against NCAA eligibility rules"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/teams\/tennessee-volunteers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tennessee<\/a> QB <a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/joey-aguilar-62716\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Joey Aguilar<\/a> has been granted a temporary restraining order against the NCAA eligibility rules, per On3\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PeteNakos\" rel=\"nofollow\">Pete Nakos.<\/a> It\u2019s the first step in a potential return for 2026.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/college\/tennessee-volunteers\/news\/report-tennessee-qb-joey-aguilar-files-eligibility-lawsuit-against-ncaa\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Aguilar filed the lawsuit earlier this week<\/a> to fight for a sixth year of eligibility and the ability to return to Tennessee in 2026, rather than having to go pro at this time. Now, it appears he is one step closer to doing so.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter a breakout season as the\u00a0Volunteers\u2019 quarterback in 2025, the NCAA is blocking Aguilar from playing a fourth year of Division I football \u2013 depriving Tennessee of a gifted quarterback and robbing Aguilar of millions in compensation,\u201d Aguilar\u2019s complaint says. Aguilar transferred from UCLA, albeit he was there after coming from Appalachian State and never played a down, to Tennessee prior to the 2025 season.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/nil\/newsletter\/signup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">SUBSCRIBE to the On3 NIL and Sports Business Newsletter<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Aguilar played his fifth season of college football this past season. However, the first two were spent at the junior college level. He played for Diablo Valley Community College in central California before transferring to Appalachian State for his first two seasons of Division I college football.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019d end up with the Volunteers in 2025, and is now seeking a fourth season at the D-I level. If he wins the suit and is granted an extra year of eligibility, 2026 would be Aguilar\u2019s his sixth season overall.<\/p>\n<p>The news of the lawsuit comes days after Aguilar was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/nil\/news\/tennessee-qb-joey-aguilar-granted-voluntary-dismissal-plaintiff-diego-pavia-eligibility-lawsuit\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">granted a voluntary dismissal<\/a>\u00a0as a plaintiff in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/diego-pavia-36926\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Diego Pavia<\/a>\u00a0eligibility lawsuit. He had previously\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/news\/diego-pavia-attorney-files-amended-complaint-against-ncaa-juco-rule-joey-aguilar-added-plaintiff-lawsuit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">joined the suit as a plaintiff<\/a>\u00a0in November. If he had not been voluntarily dismissed, Aguilar and 25 other student-athletes were set to see their date in court on Feb. 10th through an extension of Pavia\u2019s lawsuit.<\/p>\n<p>During his lone season so far at Tennessee, Aguilar helped lead Tennessee to an 8-5 finish in 2025. He finished the season with 3,565 passing yards, 24 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He added four more touchdowns on the ground. His passing yards total was good for 12th best in the country this past season.<\/p>\n<p>Before he arrived in Knoxville, he played 25 games for Appalachian State.
