It chronicles the history of Black bookstores in the United States. In honor of Black History Month, Mariame Kaba <a href=\"https:\/\/prisonculture.substack.com\/p\/prisons-prose-and-protest-35\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">shares the history of America\u2019s first Black bookstore,<\/a> D. Ruggles Books. As Kaba writes, \u201cIf illiteracy was a key form of oppression, then books were a pathway to freedom. No wonder, then, that Black-owned bookstores have been a central rallying point for Black resistance throughout US history. That resistance started with the very first Black-owned bookstore in the country, D. It\u2019s a stellar cast, including Elle Fanning as the titular Margo, alongside Nick Offerman, Michelle Pfeiffer, Nicole Kidman and more. The story follows the titular Margo, daughter of a Hooters waitress and ex-pro wrestler as she finds herself accidentally pregnant from an affair with her English professor. Unemployed and desperate for cash to support herself and child, she starts an OnlyFans account. Her estranged father showing up to move in with her is just anther piece of the complicated puzzle, but she\u2019ll take his childcare help (and borrow some of his former wrestling moves for her own devices).
