Contrary to what was believed for decades, Uranus is not merely reflecting sunlight but emitting leftover energy from its ancient past. <\/p>\n<p>Decades Of Mystery Cracked Open<\/p>\n<p>For nearly 40 years, scientists were puzzled by Uranus\u2019s unusual thermal behavior. Unlike other gas giants, the seventh planet from the Sun seemed eerily cold \u2014 almost as if it had no internal heat source at all. Data from <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/voyager\/voyager-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">NASA\u2019s Voyager 2<\/a> flyby in 1986 found no strong signs of heat escaping from inside, prompting confusion across the planetary science community.<\/p>\n<p>But a<a href=\"https:\/\/agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1029\/2025GL115660\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"> new study led by Xinyue Wang<\/a>, a former doctoral student at the University of Houston\u2019s Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, finally turns that story on its head. According to Wang, \u201cThis means it\u2019s still slowly losing leftover heat from its early history,\u201d confirming that Uranus is not thermally dead. The planet emits more energy than it absorbs from the Sun.<\/p>\n<p>The research was published on July 14 in Geophysical Research Letters and aligns with an independent study led by Professor Patrick Irwin of the University of Oxford. Their collective findings form a compelling body of evidence that Uranus is far more dynamic than once thought.<\/p>\n<p>Uranus Emits Less Heat Than Its Siblings<\/p>\n<p>Compared to its fellow gas giants, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailygalaxy.com\/2025\/04\/nasa-view-uranus-during-rare-stellar-event\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"87845\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Uranus <\/a>still plays it cool. While Jupiter, Saturn, and Neptune emit up to twice as much energy as they receive from the <a href=\"https:\/\/dailygalaxy.com\/2025\/07\/artificial-solar-eclipses-suns-secrets\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"95064\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sun<\/a>, Uranus only radiates about 12.5% more. That makes it the faintest emitter in its category \u2014 but still enough to disprove earlier assumptions.<\/p>\n<p>Xun Jiang, a co-author and professor in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at UH, notes that \u201cfrom a scientific perspective, this study helps us better understand Uranus and other giant planets. For future space exploration, I think it strengthens the case for a mission to Uranus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This could mean its internal makeup traps heat differently or that it experienced a unique formation path. Scientists are also now factoring in the planet\u2019s unusual spin and off-center orbit, which contribute to dramatic seasonal changes that span roughly 20 years each.<\/p>\n<p>According to Wang, these long seasons might influence how Uranus stores and releases energy. That level of complexity in its thermal behavior suggests a more layered and intricate interior than previously modeled.<\/p>\n<p>Renewed Urgency For NASA\u2019s Flagship Uranus Mission<\/p>\n<p>The new evidence adds urgency to NASA\u2019s long-anticipated Uranus Orbiter and Probe Mission, which the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine designated as the highest planetary science priority for the decade spanning 2023 to 2032.<\/p>\n<p>Liming Li, a co-author and professor in the UH Department of Physics, believes this study will directly shape the mission\u2019s planning.
