In an interview with The Independent<\/a> published on Saturday, Jan. 31, the star opened up about topic while discussing being raised in the industry (her parents<\/a> are actors Bruce Dern and Diana Ladd), and explained why she thinks the current generation has it the hardest.<\/p>\n “But it\u2019s so much worse now than for my mother\u2019s generation,” the actress, 58, said. “I remember, when I was a child, hearing her friends talk about the pressure at 70 to get a facelift if you wanted to keep working. But now I\u2019m hearing my 21-year-old daughter\u2019s friends say, \u2018You should get Botox\u00a0now\u00a0so that you\u2019re\u00a0never\u00a0wrinkled.'”<\/p>\n “It\u2019s tragic!\u201d the Jurassic Park actress added. \u201cSo the idea that we\u2019re advancing in empowerment is bats—. And these are societal norms that have been created, most of the time, from people\u2019s fears and insecurities.”<\/p>\n Theo Wargo\/Getty<\/p>\n Dern continued that the pressures on women are rooted in “consumerism.”<\/p>\n “It\u2019s like the tobacco industry saying smoking looks cool,” she said. “Look at the Marlboro Man! They\u2019re just making money. They\u2019re saying we\u2019ll have a whole generation of girls buying our products if we say it\u2019s \u2018preventative\u2019. But we\u2019re supposed to be the ones to not buy into it, right?\u201d<\/p>\n Dern shares Jaya and son\u00a0Ellery Harper<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0her ex-husband, Grammy-winning musician\u00a0Ben Harper<\/a>.<\/p>\n In March 2022, the\u00a0Big Little Lies actress appeared on\u00a0The Ellen DeGeneres Show<\/a>\u00a0where she opened up about Jaya’s ambition to be an actress. She accessorized with a black leather belt and black clutch purse.
