{"id":450082,"date":"2026-02-05T07:30:16","date_gmt":"2026-02-05T07:30:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/450082\/"},"modified":"2026-02-05T07:30:16","modified_gmt":"2026-02-05T07:30:16","slug":"un-warns-of-humanitarian-collapse-in-cuba-as-us-seeks-to-block-oil-supplies-donald-trump-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/450082\/","title":{"rendered":"UN warns of humanitarian collapse in Cuba as US seeks to block oil supplies | Donald Trump News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__subhead\">Warning comes as US threatens tariffs on any country that supplies oil to the Caribbean island.<\/p>\n<p>Published On 5 Feb 20265 Feb 2026<\/p>\n<p>Click here to share on social media<\/p>\n<p>share2<\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-share__social-text\">Share<\/p>\n<p>United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned of a humanitarian \u201ccollapse\u201d in Cuba if its energy needs go unmet after the United States <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/1\/31\/president-diaz-canel-slams-trumps-bid-to-suffocate-cuba-economy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">moved<\/a> to block all oil from reaching the Caribbean island and threatened tariffs on any nations that step in to help.<\/p>\n<p>The warning on Wednesday came amid a severe fuel shortage in Cuba that has prompted hours of blackouts, even in the capital Havana, as well as a surge in prices for food and transportation.<\/p>\n<p>Recommended Stories list of 4 itemsend of list<\/p>\n<p>Stephane Dujarric, a spokesman for Guterres, told reporters in New York that the UN chief was \u201cextremely concerned about the humanitarian situation in Cuba\u201d, which he said will \u201cworsen if not collapse, if its oil needs go unmet\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Dujarric also noted that for more than three decades, the UN General Assembly, too, has consistently called for an end to the trade embargo imposed by the US on Cuba.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe secretary-general urges all parties to pursue dialogue and respect for international law,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The US and Cuba have been foes since the Cuban revolution of 1959, when Fidel Castro took power, and his socialist government nationalised US-owned businesses. Washington responded with economic sanctions that were tightened into a full embargo in 1962.<\/p>\n<p>The Caribbean island has long been in the grip of an economic crisis and had relied on Venezuela for its oil until US forces abducted Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in a raid on his residence in Caracas last month.<\/p>\n<p>US President Donald Trump subsequently claimed control of Venezuelan oil and promised to starve Cuba of the commodity.\u00a0He has labelled Cuba \u201can unusual and extraordinary threat\u201d to the US, and said he wants to \u201cmake a deal\u201d with Cuba\u2019s leadership, without saying what an agreement might look like.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has also threatened <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/1\/30\/trump-threatens-tariffs-on-countries-supplying-cuba-with-much-needed-oil\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tariffs<\/a> on any other nation stepping in to help, prompting worry in Mexico, which is currently the island\u2019s main supplier of oil.<\/p>\n<p>Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Tuesday that her country was using all diplomatic avenues to ensure crude shipments to Cuba. She, too, warned of a humanitarian crisis in Cuba but said she did not want to put her own country \u201cat risk in terms of tariffs\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re looking at the scope\u201d of Trump\u2019s threatened tariffs, \u201cand we\u2019re using all diplomatic channels\u201d, she told reporters.<\/p>\n<p>Sheinbaum added that Mexico would send humanitarian aid to Cuba this week and was seeking an agreement with Washington that would allow it to also send oil. \u201cThere is still no agreement on this,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Cuba\u2019s President Miguel Diaz-Canel slammed Trump\u2019s tariff threat last week, saying the US leader was planning \u201cto suffocate\u201d Cuba\u2019s economy under a \u201cfalse and baseless pretext\u201d. The country also declared an \u201cinternational emergency\u201d saying Trump\u2019s move constitutes \u201can unusual and extraordinary threat\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>According to The Financial Times, Mexico supplied some 44 percent of Cuba\u2019s oil imports, and Venezuela supplied 33 percent until last month. About 10 percent is also sourced from Russia and a smaller amount from Algeria, it said.<\/p>\n<p>The British newspaper also cited the\u00a0Kpler data company as reporting on January 30 that Cuba only has enough oil to last 15 to 20 days at current levels of demand.<\/p>\n<p>The US embassy in Cuba, meanwhile, warned Americans in the country on Tuesday to prepare for \u201csignificant disruption\u201d from power outages \u2060and fuel shortages.<\/p>\n<p>Cuba\u2019s Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernandez de Cossio told \u200dthe Reuters news agency on Monday that Cuba and the US are in communication, although he noted the exchanges have not evolved into formal \u201cdialogue\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Warning comes as US threatens tariffs on any country that supplies oil to the Caribbean island.
