While since the big inaugural release there have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phoronix.com\/news\/Ongoing-COSMIC-Work-Jan-2026\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">some point releases to help polish it<\/a>, for COSMIC Epoch 2 and then Epoch 3 are some pretty significant features planned. A Vulkan renderer for the COSMIC Wayland compositor will hopefully make it into the next release plus some exciting performance work and more. In a blog post today System76 shared some of their action items.&#13;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1770284890_224_image.webp\" alt=\"COSMIC desktop\"\/><\/p>\n<p>COSMIC Epoch 2 action items include:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Performance optimizations such as reactive rendering to significantly reduce CPU usage (60~80%) as well as multi-threaded image decoding and parallel GPU image uploads.&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Window drop shadows for libcosmic.&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Applet Settings&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; A Vulkan renderer for the COSMIC compositor. This Vulkan renderer is motivated in part for HDR and night light features.&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Improvements to enhance the gaming experience.&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; A blur\/frosted glass effect for windows with COSMIC compositor.&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Wacom tablet support.&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile some of the features for COSMIC Epoch 3 include:&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; A COSMIC Greeter for the desktop.&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Various workspace animations.&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; HDR and Night Light support for the COSMIC compositor.&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Gamepad\/controller support work.&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; The ability to restore sessions to retain window sizes and locations during the same login.&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; SVG cursor support.&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Hotloading applets for the COSMIC panel.&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; COSMIC Settings is to add per-app volume controls.&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; For the COSMIC Edit editor to have language server protocol (LSP) support, spell checking, splits, and other features.&#13;<\/p>\n<p>More details on these planned improvements for the next two major releases of the COSMIC desktop via the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.system76.com\/post\/cosmic-epoch-2-and-3-roadmap\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">System76 blog<\/a>.
