PHILADELPHIA, New York (WWNY) – North Star Health Alliance officials say they have no plans to close two area clinics despite reports that sparked concern among local leaders and residents.<\/p>\n
The reports suggested that Philadelphia Medical Center and Madrid Health Center would lose their medical providers, prompting worry in communities that rely on the facilities for healthcare access.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy parents go there. My wife and kids have been there, so my first reaction was, I was upset. I mean, just to be frank, I was pretty upset,\u201d said John Maron, mayor of Philadelphia.<\/p>\n
North Star officials say they are unsure what caused the confusion, but confirmed that providers remain at both clinics. <\/p>\n
The Philadelphia Medical Center serves the village\u2019s 950 residents, while Madrid Health Center serves Madrid and surrounding communities.<\/p>\n
Community leaders express relief<\/p>\n
Maron said the Philadelphia clinic is the most convenient healthcare option in the area for residents.<\/p>\n
\u201cNot having to drive to Carthage or Clayton or Watertown for doctor\u2019s appointments is amazing. But actually the staff that\u2019s there knew us all, took care of us, and we felt comfortable,\u201d Maron said.<\/p>\n
Kevin Finnegan, Madrid town supervisor, said the Madrid clinic is important<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause we\u2019re centrally located, and it\u2019s been a pillar of the community for 25-plus years, we really depend on it,\u201d Finnegan said.<\/p>\n
Finnegan said losing the clinic would force Madrid, Massena and Canton residents to travel to Ogdensburg or Potsdam hospitals, which would be difficult for many elderly residents.<\/p>\n
North Star representatives said any clinic closure would require meetings with local government officials before action could be taken.<\/p>\n
