\n\tThe 78th annual DGA Awards<\/a> are underway in Los Angeles, honoring the year\u2019s most outstanding directorial achievements in film and television. The ceremony is hosted by Oscar and Emmy-nominated comedian Kumail Nanjiani.<\/p>\n

\n\tQuipped Nanjiani (who, unlike previous DGA Awards host Judd Apatow, allowed his monologue to be viewed by reporters in the press room): \u201cWelcome to the DGA Awards. It\u2019s like if a movie was just the credits!\u201d And later: \u201cI\u2019d ask you to keep your speeches short, but I\u2019ve seen your movies, I know it\u2019s not going to happen!\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThroughout the night, the five DGA nominees in the top theatrical race \u2014 Paul Thomas Anderson<\/a> (\u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d), Ryan Coogler<\/a> (\u201cSinners\u201d), Guillermo del Toro (\u201cFrankenstein\u201d), Josh Safdie (\u201cMarty Supreme\u201d) and Chloe Zhao (\u201cHamnet\u201d) \u2014 received their DGA medallions, presented by someone involved in the film\u2019s production. (Leonardo DiCaprio, for example, presented the honor to Anderson, while Michael B. Jordan paid homage to Coogler, Jacob Elordi feted del Toro and Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet showed up for Safdie.)<\/p>\n

\n\tThe DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film has long been one of the most reliable predictors of the Academy Award for best director<\/a>, which makes the ceremony one of the season\u2019s most closely watched bellwethers for the Oscars race.<\/p>\n

\n\tThis year\u2019s film nominees also mark a historic milestone for representation. It is only the second time in DGA history that a majority of nominees in the organization\u2019s top category hail from underrepresented communities. The first occurred in 2017, when Guillermo del Toro won for \u201cThe Shape of Water,\u201d alongside fellow nominees Greta Gerwig (\u201cLady Bird\u201d), Jordan Peele (\u201cGet Out\u201d), Christopher Nolan (\u201cDunkirk\u201d) and Martin McDonagh (\u201cThree Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri\u201d).<\/p>\n

\n\tSince its inception, the DGA has correctly predicted the Academy Award winner for best director in all but eight instances. The most recent divergence came in 2019, when Sam Mendes won the DGA Award for the war epic \u201c1917\u201d but lost the Oscar to Bong Joon Ho for the South Korean drama \u201cParasite,\u201d which also captured best picture. Last year, Sean Baker won the DGA\u2019s top honor for \u201cAnora,\u201d which went on to secure four Academy Awards, including best picture, best director, best original screenplay and best film editing.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen it comes to the broader best picture race<\/a>, DGA history points to the vital importance of a nomination. Only two films \u2014 \u201cDriving Miss Daisy\u201d (1989) and \u201cCODA\u201d (2022) \u2014 have won the Academy Award for best picture without receiving a DGA nomination. Meanwhile, six films have claimed the top Oscar prize without earning an Academy Award nomination for directing: \u201cWings\u201d (1927), \u201cGrand Hotel\u201d (1932), \u201cDriving Miss Daisy,\u201d \u201cArgo\u201d (2012), \u201cGreen Book\u201d (2018) and \u201cCODA.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cFrankenstein\u201d helmer Guillermo Del Toro is the only DGA nominee this year who failed to garner an Oscar nomination, with \u201cSentimental Value\u201d director Joachim Trier earning the Academy slot instead.<\/p>\n

\n\tGoing into the night, Anderson\u2019s action epic had amassed 35 critics and guild prizes for best picture, including a rare sweep of all four major critics prizes \u2014 National Board of Review, Los Angeles Film Critics Association, New York Film Critics Circle and the National Society of Film Critics. Only four films in history have achieved that feat: \u201cSchindler\u2019s List\u201d (1993), \u201cL.A. Confidential\u201d (1997), \u201cThe Social Network\u201d (2010) and now, Anderson\u2019s latest. Of those titles, only \u201cSchindler\u2019s List\u201d went on to win the Oscar for best picture. However, in the directing race, Anderson has been equally dominant, with 32 wins to date, while Coogler trails with 19.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn TV, \u201cThe Pitt\u201d and \u201cThe Bear\u201d led individual series with two nominations each. And \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d tops all franchises with three noms, via a trio of different \u201cSNL50\u201d entities: The specials \u201cSNL50: The Homecoming Concert\u201d and \u201cSNL50: The Anniversary Special\u201d and the doc series \u201cSNL50: Beyond Saturday Night.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe Pitt\u201d won the top dramatic series prize, via helmer Amanda Marsalis for the episode \u201c6:00 PM.\u201d She even beat out \u201cThe Pitt\u201d exec producer John Wells, also nominated.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cSNL50: The Anniversary Special\u201d kicked off the evening\u2019s wins, with director Liz Patrick landing the honors in the variety category. Later, \u201cDying for Sex\u201d helmer Shannon Murphy won for limited or anthology series, and \u201cConan O\u2019Brien Must Go\u2019s\u201d Mike Sweeney picked up the win for Reality\/Quiz and Game.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn addition to competitive awards, the DGA presented two special service honors recognizing exemplary contributions to the guild and the industry. Associate director and stage manager David Charles received the Franklin J. Schaffner Achievement Award, honoring extraordinary service to both the profession and the DGA. Commercials first assistant director Gregory G. McCollum will receive the Frank Capra Achievement Award, given in recognition of notable career achievement and outstanding service to the guild.<\/p>\n
