But the incongruous idea of the \u201cMarch for Billionaires\u201d has provoked an outsized response on social media. And <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2026\/02\/sf-march-for-billionaires-bust\/\" target=\"_blank\">according to Mission Local<\/a>, journalists nearly outnumbered demonstrators at the event itself, where marchers carried signs with messages like \u201cWe \u2764\ufe0f You Jeffrey Bezos\u201d and \u201cIt\u2019s very difficult to write a nuanced argument on a sign.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ostensible reason for the demonstration was to protest the Billionaire Tax Act, a proposed state ballot measure that would require Californians worth more than $1 billion to pay a one-time, 5% tax on their total wealth. If the measure actually passes, Governor Gavin Newsom said <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/01\/13\/us\/newsom-billionaire-tax-california.html\" target=\"_blank\">he will veto it<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kauffman, who founded the AI startup RunRL and is not a billionaire himself, told reporters, \u201cCalifornia is, I believe, the only state to give health insurance to people who come into the country illegally.
