Mayor Daniel Lurie and Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi on Sunday made 11th-hour appeals for San Francisco teachers and the school district to come to an agreement, less than 24 hours before a strike is set to begin<\/a> and close schools citywide<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Barring that, both asked for a 72-hour delay of Monday\u2019s strike date \u2014\u00a0and were spurned.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Lurie issued a statement<\/a> a little after 1 p.m. asking for \u201cthree additional days for the conversations to continue\u201d between the teachers union and the school district. He urged both sides to continue negotiations on Sunday \u201cto reach an agreement\u201d that both \u201csupports our hardworking educators\u201d and ensures \u201cfiscal stability\u201d for the district.<\/p>\n

Pelosi issued her own statement<\/a> echoing Lurie\u2019s call: \u201cI support the Mayor\u2019s ask that there be three additional days for conversations to continue.\u201d State Sen. Scott Wiener did the same<\/a>. <\/p>\n

The teachers union, in a press conference<\/a> held near the same time, said it had not received an acceptable proposal yet from the San Francisco Unified School District and that, until it did, the walkout would move forward as planned.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will be going on strike on Monday absent a signed tentative agreement,\u201d said Cassondra Curiel, president of the United Educators of San Francisco.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Schools are set to close across the city on Monday morning, and teachers plan to picket<\/a> their worksites. The two sides have been in talks since March<\/a> and negotiated on Saturday from 11 a.m. to almost 10 p.m.\u00a0<\/p>\n

There was \u201csome movement\u201d from the district yesterday, Curiel said, namely an \u201cimportant win\u201d to insert protections for undocumented students into the union contract.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But negotiations \u201cdidn\u2019t go far enough,\u201d she added. \u201cWe have made it very clear that our demands are for fully-funded family healthcare, for educators improvements to special education, and salary increases that do not come at the cost of concessions or takeaways.\u201d<\/p>\n

The union passed an offer to the district at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Curiel said, and received a counteroffer at 8:10 p.m. Union officials are \u201cworking hard\u201d to send a response, but need more information from the district to do so, Curiel said.<\/p>\n

Curiel said bargaining may continue Sunday if the union receives that information.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to see there\u2019s serious movement,\u201d she said. \u201cWe\u2019ll be on strike on Monday without an agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n

Superintendent Maria Su, for her part, sent a statement<\/a> Sunday morning saying she was \u201cdeeply frustrated and disheartened\u201d not to reach an agreement the prior night. After missing the prior session, Su was present during Saturday\u2019s negotiations alongside the district\u2019s bargaining team.<\/p>\n

Su said she was \u201cready to work on reaching a full agreement\u201d and to \u201creturn to the bargaining table\u201d on Sunday.<\/p>\n
