Construction on new tennis courts and upgraded facilities at Bluemont Park begins next week, kicking off an expected year-and-a-half of renovations.<\/p>\n

The tennis courts and parking lot will be fenced off and closed to the public during construction, as will a small section of the Four Mile Run Trail, the Department of Parks and Recreation said in an advisory<\/a>. The park\u2019s baseball diamond, soccer field and playground will remain open.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen using these facilities we recommend parking on N Manchester St, at the southern parking lot near the park\u2019s playground, or appropriate street parking in the surrounding neighborhood,\u201d a project webpage<\/a> says. \u201cPlease do not park at Ashlawn Elementary School during school hours.\u201d<\/p>\n

Signs will be placed in high-traffic areas to alert the public about closures and detours. People on the Four Mile Run Trail will have to reroute onto the W&OD Trail near the construction zone.<\/p>\n

Construction is expected to last through early fall 2027, although the timeline is \u201cweather dependent,\u201d according to the county.<\/p>\n

The $6.5 million project is intended to turn Bluemont Park\u2019s tennis courts into a regional showplace<\/a> for the sport. In addition to replacing the existing courts and reducing flooding<\/a>, the project will provide new lighting, a new picnic shelter and upgrades to the restrooms and parking lot.<\/p>\n

The undertaking has been a long time coming. The planning phase began in 2018 but halted for several years during the pandemic. Following public feedback<\/a> in 2024, the County Board unanimously approved<\/a> a construction contract in October.<\/p>\n
