For Tulsa portrait photographer Curtis Sprague, the most important part of any photograph isn\u2019t the camera or the lighting \u2014 it\u2019s the person standing in front of the lens.<\/p>\n
Sprague has spent the past eight years photographing people professionally, building a career rooted in trust, storytelling, and connection. A self-taught photographer, he began taking portraits in 2018 and quickly became an active member of Tulsa\u2019s photography community, learning alongside peers who would later become close friends.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s 100% about the people for us,\u201d Sprague said. \u201cThe relationships are what matter most, and the photographs come from that.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sprague primarily specializes in portrait photography, including high school seniors, families, personal branding, and boudoir sessions, while also working with select commercial clients. His people-first approach has earned him widespread recognition at the local, state, and national levels.<\/p>\n

His accolades include being named Indiana Professional Photographers Association Photographer of the Year in 2019 and 2022, as well as Oklahoma Professional Photographers of America Photographer of the Year in 2022. He currently serves as president of the Tulsa Area Professional Photographers Association.<\/p>\n Sprague says his inspiration comes from many sources \u2014 from other photographers whose work he admires to stories, artwork, and everyday moments.<\/p>\n \u201cInspiration is everywhere if you\u2019ll look for it,\u201d he said. \u201cEach job brings something different.\u201d<\/p>\n Two images in particular stand out as milestones in his career. The first was a portrait of a former SWAT teammate, taken in Sprague\u2019s own entryway using a Walmart shop light and a Canon Rebel camera. That image later appeared on the cover of Oklahoma Photographer Magazine, solidifying his decision to pursue photography professionally.<\/p>\n Another deeply personal photograph features his oldest daughter wearing her great-grandfather\u2019s suit \u2014 the same one he wore to his own wedding at age 16 \u2014 capturing a moment of family history and emotional connection.<\/p>\n Today, Sprague continues to photograph clients across Tulsa while mentoring others through his leadership in the professional photography community.
