Responders told them to continue climbing until they reached a trail heading down where they could meet rescuers coming up the mountain.

Rescuers climbed almost 3 miles and over 2,000 feet up, some carrying a litter, finally reaching the pair at around five hours later, not far before midnight. Both were reportedly suffering from hypothermia. The man was able to walk back down with help after warming up a bit; the woman needed to be carried down.

Vermont State Police provided this photo of the response to the two stranded hikers on Camels Hump on Saturday, February 7, 2026.

Upon reaching the trailhead at about 4:00 a.m., she was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover.

Richmond Rescue reports an estimated temperature of -15 degrees Fahrenheit at the time responders reached the two hikers, along with wind that made it feel even colder.

This was not even the only rescue in the Green Mountains on Saturday, as Stowe Mountain Rescue separately carried an injured skier back from Bolton that afternoon. Responders said in that operation that her companions’ medical knowledge, including the Wilderness First Responder certification, helped keep her safe until responders arrived.

According to Vermont State Police, anyone worried their life may be at risk while in the backcountry should not delay calling 911, as “Vermont, unlike some other jurisdictions, does not hold people who call for backcountry assistance financially liable for their rescues.”

Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media, Inc.
