But today\u2019s investors are more selective, demanding stronger evidence that companies are poised to benefit from the AI boom.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfojd7o0000356pg2cxgogv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Wall Street is debating whether software companies can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/02\/04\/investing\/us-stocks-anthropic-software\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">protect their market share from AI startups\u2019 new tools<\/a>. Investors have grown skeptical of Big Tech\u2019s plans to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/12\/19\/tech\/ai-chips-lifecycle-questions\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">build data centers<\/a>. But at the same time, they\u2019ve continued betting on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/01\/05\/tech\/vera-rubin-nvidia-ai-ces\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">chipmakers<\/a> that power the AI boom.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfj8dds0005356pk7hduqkp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some software companies have emerged as potential AI losers, while hardware companies (think semiconductor chipmakers) continue to be AI winners. Popular exchange-traded funds highlight the divergence: The iShares expanded tech-software ETF is down 20% this year, while the VanEck semiconductor ETF is up 13%.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfqsfkr0000356pwdgz04oo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe rising tide surrounding AI was lifting a lot of boats,\u201d Steve Sosnick, chief strategist at Interactive Brokers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/02\/06\/markets\/tech-stocks-meltdown-why\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">previously told CNN<\/a>. \u201cNow it\u2019s forcing Wall Street to be much more selective and really decide who are the winners and losers. And that\u2019s going to require a lot more detailed analysis, rather than just sort of riding the momentum train.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfma59r000d356pu0ptoqc4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A sell-off swept through software stocks last week after Anthropic \u2014 one of the world\u2019s biggest AI startups \u2014 released new plug-ins for its Claude chatbot. The plug-ins improved the chatbot\u2019s ability to do work-oriented tasks and stoked concerns that such AI tools could reduce businesses\u2019 need for their existing software subscriptions.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfmb0a4000g356p1s3j6fjg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Investors are split on whether the sell-off was overdone. But software companies will need to evolve to co-exist with improvements in AI, said Angelo Zino, tech analyst at CFRA Research.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfmc4pz000j356puzfsv1o4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Software companies that can leverage their own proprietary data and develop their own AI offerings could compete with chatbots like Claude, he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfmr8om0027356p4p5ykgol@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cYou\u2019ve got to be a lot more selective,\u201d Zino said. \u201cThe (companies) that do have access to customer data, and then can actually build actual (AI) agents upon that, those are going to be the ones that are going to be able to successfully evolve.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfmew8n000t356pqull71wn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Dan Ives, a tech bull and global head of technology research at Wedbush Securities, called the software sell-off \u201coverblown\u201d in a note on Monday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfpu8cp0000356p9uttm7ku@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Ives said many customers have reservations about data privacy and protection, which could be a hurdle for general AI chatbots becoming go-to services for businesses.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfmgxbv0016356pbw7s50aa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While there are doubts about the software industry, Wall Street has resounding confidence that hardware companies are AI winners.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfmg68x000z356puiygbi2m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Semiconductor chips are vital for the AI boom. Chipmakers like Nvidia (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/markets\/stocks\/NVDA\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NVDA<\/a>) have benefited from plans for enormous spending on data centers, regardless of whether investors approve of Big Tech\u2019s aspirations.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfmhhzu001a356putmsbmn1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Memory chipmakers have also seen extraordinary surges due to expectations for the AI buildout to boost demand for data storage. The \u201cMagnificent Seven\u201d group of technology stocks that powered the market higher across the past few years are diverging.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfmn0ww001l356pyf74av8m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Big Tech \u201chyperscalers\u201d like Microsoft (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/markets\/stocks\/MSFT\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MSFT<\/a>), Amazon (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/markets\/stocks\/AMZN\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AMZN<\/a>), Meta (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/markets\/stocks\/META\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">META<\/a>) and Alphabet (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/markets\/stocks\/GOOG\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">GOOG<\/a>), or companies building out infrastructure for the AI boom, are facing heightened scrutiny about their spending plans.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfn38yy0032356pk2ojnbu1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI think there\u2019s more risk now tied to some of these data center companies, these hyperscalers, because of the greater spending that they\u2019re taking on,\u201d Zino said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfqsjfr0002356px5mgbg4q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            To be sure, some investors are betting that the enormous build out will eventually translate into revenue and profits.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfq72fh0000356p4w4ul8fg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Alphabet and Meta shares are each up 3% this year. Amazon shares are down 10%, and Microsoft shares are down 14%.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfrfhd30000356plp198uz9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI would argue we are still in the early innings of a long-tailed investment cycle, but we have moved past the \u2018beta\u2019 or \u2018get-me-in\u2019 phase where names are rewarded simply for announcing they are spending on AI-related capex,\u201d Kevin McCullough, portfolio consultant at asset management company Natixis Investment Managers Solutions, said in an email. \u201cThe next phase of this cycle, where the market tries to pick winners and losers, is likely here to stay.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfmoo80001v356pjqkezbmp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some investors are looking for winners in the AI boom by finding companies that might benefit from the side effects.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfmo3kh001r356p9l4bw3jv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Caterpillar (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/markets\/stocks\/CAT\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CAT<\/a>), for example, has benefited from the data center buildout. The industrial and construction company hit a record high Tuesday and is the best-performing stock in the Dow this year, with shares up 30%.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfq3asg000e356p3dtikzmt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The AI boom also centers around OpenAI, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/10\/07\/business\/openai-nvidia-bubble-nightcap\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">circular financing<\/a> between some Big Tech, chipmakers and cloud companies has raised questions about the size and health of long-term funding for the industry\u2019s aspirations.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfr1uy4000b356papvfoc8e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Zino at CFRA Research said companies with financial obligations related to OpenAI\u2019s success might see elevated scrutiny from investors.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfq9zf70004356p4p7evvco@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Wall Street is ultimately trying to discern the leaders and laggards of an investment theme that is becoming more nuanced as it ages and develops.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfr6hl10005356p92fzv99j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe winners and losers from a revolutionary technology are often not clear for years,\u201d Ajay Rajadhyaksha, managing director at Barclays, said in a Sunday note.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfqx7sy0005356p1e7cdczw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            James Reilly, senior markets economist at Capital Economics, said in a note that while the broader stock market continues to climb higher, exposure to AI will be a specific boost or drag for certain companies.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlfqmrs90000356ppcl91vgq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cUltimately, firms\u2019 exposures to the AI revolution can be grouped into one of three boxes: those who enable, those who adopt and those who are disrupted,\u201d Reilly said.\n    <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"New York \u00a0\u2014\u00a0 For years, anything exposed to artificial intelligence was a hot trade on Wall Street.
