If Republicans in Congress are still harbouring concerns
\nabout how federal officers have enforced immigration law in Minneapolis and
\nelsewhere in recent weeks, there has been little evidence of it during today\u2019s
\nhearings at the House Homeland Security Committee.<\/p>\n

Many Democrats on the committee have pressed Todd Lyons,
\nacting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and Rodney Scott,
\ncommissioner of Customs and Border Protection, during these hearings on clashes
\nwith protesters, including the shooting deaths of two American citizens. Some,
\nlike LaMonica McIver of New Jersey and Eric Swalwell of California, have done
\nso in fiery terms.<\/p>\n

The Republicans on the committee, however, have largely
\ndefended federal actions, highlighted threats against enforcement officers and
\ncondemned Democrats for disregarding what they say are the threats that
\nundocumented migrants present to Americans.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a return to the partisan trenches after it appeared,
\nfor a brief moment, that public outcry following the shooting of Alex Pretti
\nmight prompt greater congressional scrutiny of the Trump administration\u2019s
\nactivities in Minneapolis and elsewhere. <\/p>\n
