While Matthew Lillard\u2019s performance in \u201cScream\u201d may be revered by horror fans, the actor had some blunt criticism for his younger self, suggesting he did \u201ctoo much\u201d in the Wes Craven classic.<\/p>\n

The horror legend discussed his work as one of the first \u201cScream\u201d villains, Stu Macher, during Tuesday\u2019s episode of the \u201cOn Film\u2026With Kevin McCarthy\u201d podcast and recalled how some of his most iconic lines were actually improvised.<\/p>\n

Still, Lillard said he saw flaws in his performance, noting he felt that he overacted in several scenes.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do think you see a young actor trying hard in every scene,\u201d he said. \u201cYou know, doing too much. He\u2019s chewing the scenery.\u201d<\/p>\n

This sentiment shocked podcast host Kevin McCarthy, who asked if Lillard really saw himself \u201cthat way\u201d and praised the actor as \u201cbrilliant\u201d in the beloved horror movie.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think what is brilliant is that [Craven] has crafted a perfect Jenga tower of performances,\u201d Lillard responded. \u201cJamie Kennedy\u2019s perfect. Neve Campbell\u2019s perfect. W. Earl Brown\u2019s perfect. Courteney Cox, Skeet Ulrich, all of them \u2026 have these moments. He got the right cast and the right script and the right, sort of, performances to build something in the moment that caught the zeitgeist.\u201d<\/p>\n

When asked about his character\u2019s \u201cdrooling of blood\u201d in the film\u2019s conclusion, Lillard doubled down on his stance, adding, \u201cThat\u2019s Matt Lillard chewing scenery \u2026 That\u2019s all Matt Lillard just being an idiot boy. That\u2019s that thing like, doing too much.\u201d Watch his remarks below.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Lillard will get a second stab at Stu Macher, as the actor is set to reprise his role in \u201cScream 7.\u201d A logline for the newest addition to the \u201cScream\u201d franchise reads: \u201cWhen a new Ghostface killer emerges in the town where Sidney Prescott has built a new life, her darkest fears are realized as her daughter becomes the next target.\u201d<\/p>\n

The film also stars Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Isabel May, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding and Joel McHale.<\/p>\n

\u201cScream 7\u201d arrives in theaters on February 27.<\/p>\n
