\n\tSamantha Bee<\/a> doesn\u2019t find it surprising that CBS<\/a> decided to cancel The Late Show<\/a> with Stephen Colbert<\/a> amid the Paramount and Skydance merger.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe former late-night talk show host made an appearance on the Breaking Bread with Tom Papa podcast where she gave her take on Colbert\u2019s show getting cancelled.<\/p>\n

\n\tPapa noted that the show was losing $40 million a year and that the show\u2019s \u201cparent company is trying to curry favor with the president\u201d over the merger.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI think both things are true,\u201d Bee said. \u201cIt definitely was hemorrhaging money. These legacy shows are hemorrhaging money with no real end to that \u2014 in sight, people are just not tuning in.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tShe continued, \u201cPeople are literally on their phones all the time for one thing, so they actually don\u2019t necessarily need a recap of the day\u2019s events. They\u2019re very well-versed in what has happened.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBee said that viewers are now more interested in watching \u201cpeople just absolutely murder each other in a South Korean game show\u201d or \u201cwatching people fall off cliffs to relax at night before nodding off,\u201d in addition to changing viewing habits.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt is also true that when the president of the United States has to give his sign off on a corporate merger, the thing you can\u2019t do is make jokes about him. He\u2019s a thin-skinned idiot and we know he\u2019s like a pernicious cancer and he cares about that stuff,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

\n\tBee recalled that during the time she hosted Full Frontal, there were several mergers, and \u201cit was a constant source of conversation,\u201d about not causing any trouble amid the multi-billion dollar transactions.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s so much easier for them to cut it loose with this merger coming down the pike,\u201d she said. \u201cIt makes the decision such a no-brainer, and probably the most agonizing decisions they were having were about how do we float this? How do we not get a lot of blowback? I\u2019m sure they knew it was happening a long time ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBee said that the decision to end The Late Show was \u201cawful\u201d as she knows a lot of the people that work there, adding, \u201cI love Stephen. I consider him to be a friend. I think he\u2019s amazing. I\u2019m shocked, not surprised.\u201d<\/p>\n
