Eden Evins, director of the Center for Addiction Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. \u201cKids are initiating it at younger and younger ages.\u201d It\u2019s a worrying trend: of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/tobacco\/e-cigarettes\/youth.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">1.63 million<\/a> middle and high school students who use e-cigarettes, which have <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/treatments\/21162-vaping\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">several negative health effects<\/a>, one in four <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/wr\/mm7244a1.htm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">do so daily<\/a>. \u201cKids told us they never expected to lose control over their vaping,\u201d she says. To provide pediatricians and school counselors with an evidence-backed solution to the growing addiction problem, she tested varenicline, a tobacco cessation pill for adults, in this new population. A study <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama\/fullarticle\/2833137\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">published in JAMA<\/a> in April 2025 of 300 adolescents found varenicline was a more effective quitting aid for vaping teens than a placebo or behavioral interventions alone.
