A distraught puppy parent is then seen uploading an image of a grinning Labrador retriever. When someone reports a lost dog in the app, Ring scans cloud footage from every nearby, outdoor, Search Party-enabled Ring camera for a potential match. If the scan is successful, the camera\u2019s owner gets a notification \u2014 not the owner of the lost dog. The camera\u2019s owner can then decide to share the clip with the dog\u2019s owner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">According to Ring, \u201cnothing is shared automatically\u201d and \u201cthe search is temporary, expiring after a few hours unless renewed,\u201d as GeekWire <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.geekwire.com\/2026\/what-rings-search-party-actually-does-and-why-its-super-bowl-ad-gave-people-the-creeps\/\" data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:recently reported;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">recently reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But the problem, critics say, is less about what Search Party is doing than how it\u2019s doing it: with facial recognition technology powered by <a href=\"https:\/\/tech.yahoo.com\/ai\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:artificial intelligence;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">artificial intelligence<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIf the Search Party function built into the doorbell camera\u2019s app can be used to find a lost dog,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/ring-using-lost-dogs-surveillance-203806550.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:warned;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" target=\"_blank\">warned<\/a> Hayes Brown of MSNow, \u201cthere\u2019s little to stop it from being used to track people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Why is Search Party controversial?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Given Amazon\u2019s record and Ring\u2019s recent moves, privacy experts have speculated that Search Party, which was introduced late last year, could be a Trojan horse for AI-driven human surveillance at a time when federal law enforcement is using similar tools to <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/01\/30\/technology\/tech-ice-facial-recognition-palantir.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:find individuals for deportation;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">find individuals for deportation<\/a> and <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/tech\/security\/ice-agent-facial-recognition-video-protest-movile-fortify-photo-rcna257331\" data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:scan protesters\u2019 faces for rapid identification;cpos:6;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">scan protesters\u2019 faces for rapid identification<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Here are a few points of concern:<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Amazon acquired Ring in 2018. Soon after, the company launched Neighbors, an app that provides \u201creal-time crime and safety alerts\u201d in partnership with local law enforcement. In 2022, The Verge <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/7\/14\/23219419\/amazon-ring-law-enforcement-no-warrant-no-consent\" data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:reported;cpos:7;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">reported<\/a> that police departments could request and receive emergency access to Ring footage without owners&#8217; permission or even a warrant. Facing backlash, Ring later <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/amazons-ring-stop-giving-police-185000787.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:8;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:announced;cpos:8;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> it would end this feature.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Last fall, however, Ring <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/10\/16\/amazon-ring-cameras-surveillance-law-enforcement-crime-police-investigations.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:9;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:inked;cpos:9;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">inked<\/a> deals with two security companies: Flock Safety (which makes law enforcement devices like security cameras and automated license plate readers) and its competitor Axon Enterprises (whose product line includes Tasers and body cameras).\u00a0 It then relaunched its law-enforcement partnerships with a feature called Community Requests, which again allows local law enforcement to request access to users\u2019 footage \u2014 this time through Flock or Axon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A Ring spokesperson recently <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/tech\/876866\/ring-search-party-super-bowl-ad-online-backlash\" data-i13n=\"cpos:10;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:told The Verge;cpos:10;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">told The Verge<\/a> that \u201cthe reason we [partnered with Flock and Axon] is these third-party evidence management systems offer a much more secure chain of custody.\u201d But as 404 Media <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.404media.co\/ice-taps-into-nationwide-ai-enabled-camera-network-data-shows\/\" data-i13n=\"cpos:11;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:reported last year;cpos:11;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">reported last year<\/a>, local police departments have already been searching Flock&#8217;s camera network on behalf of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP), giving federal law enforcement \u201cside-door access to a tool that it currently does not have a formal contract for.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Despite saying for years that Ring doesn\u2019t do facial recognition, Amazon has also recently launched <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/ring.com\/ring-ai-features?srsltid=AfmBOoqdzIjiaqt49WupWkO9EtLLMaSQdw3dgJ5clEvL0w1PVgV9cIwz&amp;ref=404media.co\" data-i13n=\"cpos:12;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:an AI-powered beta product called;cpos:12;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">an AI-powered beta product called<\/a> \u201cFamiliar Faces\u201d that allows you to \u201ceasily tag your family and friends in the Ring app so your 2K and 4K cameras can notify you when someone [you know] is spotted\u201d at your door.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The nexus between local police, federal immigration agents and AI facial recognition analysis has some worried about what could come next.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThis definitely isn\u2019t about dogs \u2014 it\u2019s about mass surveillance,\u201d Democratic Sen. Ed Markey of Massachusetts <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SenMarkey\/status\/2020991127046750444\" data-i13n=\"cpos:13;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:posted on X;cpos:13;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">posted on X<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>How has Ring responded?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A Ring spokesperson told the Verge that Search Party is \u201cnot capable of processing human biometrics\u201d; that Familiar Faces is separate from Search Party, with zero communal sharing; that Community Requests is \u201cbuilt for the use of local public safety agencies only\u201d; that all requests for footage can be seen on its Neighbors app; and that Ring has no partnerships with ICE or any other federal agency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">For its part, Flock <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.flocksafety.com\/blog\/does-flock-share-data-with-ice\" data-i13n=\"cpos:14;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:says;cpos:14;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">says<\/a> it &#8220;does not work with&#8221; or &#8220;partner with ICE,&#8221; and police departments can only access footage by <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.flocksafety.com\/blog\/flock-safety-and-ring-partner-to-help-neighborhoods-work-together-for-safer-communities\" data-i13n=\"cpos:15;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:requesting;cpos:15;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">requesting<\/a> it from the camera&#8217;s owners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThese are not tools for mass surveillance,\u201d the Ring spokesperson insisted. \u201cWe build the right guardrails, and we\u2019re super transparent about them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But while users have to opt-in to Familiar Faces, Search Party is <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/790928\/ring-search-party-cameras-default-opt-out\" data-i13n=\"cpos:16;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:enabled by default;cpos:16;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">enabled by default<\/a> on any outdoor camera enrolled in Ring\u2019s subscription plan. Few choose to opt-out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">For some Ring customers, the idea that their camera can connect with neighbors \u2014 or even police \u2014 might provide a sense of safety. But others will blanch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">After two years away, Siminoff returned to Ring (and Amazon) in April 2025 to oversee its home security business.
