Christopher Nolan isn\u2019t willing to give his actors free rein \u2014 even if that actor happens to be Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet<\/a>. <\/p>\n

The Oscar-nominated Marty Supreme star \u2014 who appeared in the British director\u2019s critically acclaimed 2014 sci-fi adventure Interstellar <\/a>as the younger version of Casey Affleck\u2019s Tom \u2014 spoke with Nolan ahead of a recent Imax 70mm screening of the film at the AMC Universal Citywalk in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

During their conversation, which was shared on YouTube, Chalamet asked the Oscar-winning Oppenheimer filmmaker, 55, whether he gives certain actors \u201ca little more bandwidth.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cNo, I don\u2019t indulge people like you doing crazy s***,\u201d Nolan replied. Citing a specific example, he recalled the time Chalamet, now 30, <\/a>was filming the scene in which his character records messages from home for his father in space. <\/p>\n

\u201cThere was a particular thing where you were hitting a dark tone,\u201d the Inception director remembered. \u201cIt felt too much for me. I didn\u2019t particularly like it. <\/p>\n

\u201cI told you about it, and you went ahead and did whatever the f*** you wanted and carried on,\u201d he added. \u201cBut I was like, \u2018He knows what he wants to do and has an idea.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Interjecting with laughter, Chalamet admitted: \u201cI don\u2019t even remember that! That\u2019s crazy. I didn\u2019t even think you knew my name, man. This is unbelievable.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI might not have known your name,\u201d Nolan quipped, \u201cbut I knew what you were doing. It wasn\u2019t about being stubborn. You had planned what you wanted to do. You planned your choices and you didn\u2019t want to abandon that on a casual whim for me. You wanted to test that and challenge that and see if I kept coming back, which I didn\u2019t. I\u2019ll find a logic to that in the edit suite.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cActually, to be honest, the edge you were giving is what Casey was then putting into the late performance. I couldn\u2019t necessarily see that at the time because we hadn\u2019t done any of that stuff yet. And as a director, you are looking for an actor to interpret the script in their own way and bring their point of view on it. And you have a point of view.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nolan clarified that it is \u201cnot really about letting people off the leash\u201d but \u201cit\u2019s about trying to give them what they need as a director.\u201d<\/p>\n

Interstellar, which follows former NASA pilot Cooper (Matthew McConaughey)<\/a> as he\u2019s sent to explore the galaxy in search of a planet suitable for human life, earned a handful of Oscar nominations, including Best Visual Effects and Best Production Design.
