Plus: Indexing killed the mutual fund star.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0 text_align_left\">Poof!<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0 text_align_left\">The Labor Department said Wednesday that revised data show the US economy had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2026\/02\/11\/business\/jobs-report-employment-january-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2026\/02\/11\/business\/jobs-report-employment-january-2026\/\">a million fewer jobs<\/a> at the end of last year than previously reported. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0 text_align_left\">You might ask: \u201cWhere did they go?\u201d The simple answer: They never existed in the first place. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0 text_align_left\">This is no surprise to those familiar with the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Labor Department division whose employment report each month is among the most important economic releases produced by the government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0 text_align_left\">Counting jobs is a process that requires frequent revisions, both on a monthly and annual basis, as more accurate \u2014 but less timely \u2014information becomes available.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0 text_align_left\">On Wednesday, we got both, and the annual update showed there were 158,497,000 jobs as of December, 1.03 million fewer than the previous BLS estimate.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Welcome to Trendlines.
