{"id":465400,"date":"2026-02-13T02:58:09","date_gmt":"2026-02-13T02:58:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/465400\/"},"modified":"2026-02-13T02:58:09","modified_gmt":"2026-02-13T02:58:09","slug":"u-s-signs-trade-deal-with-taiwan-lowering-tariffs-to-15","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/465400\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. signs trade deal with Taiwan, lowering tariffs to 15%"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. and Taiwanese flags are seen in San Francisco, California, Jan. 28, 2026. <\/p>\n<p>Stephen Nellis | Reuters<\/p>\n<p>Washington and Taipei have signed a trade deal lowering tariffs on Taiwanese exports to 15%, on par with those on Asian allies Japan and South Korea, while the island will open its market for U.S. goods. <\/p>\n<p>Taiwan will remove or reduce 99% of tariff barriers on U.S. goods, as well as provide &#8220;preferential market access&#8221; for U.S. industrial and agricultural exports. These include autos, beef products and minerals. <\/p>\n<p>Taiwan <a href=\"https:\/\/ustr.gov\/about\/policy-offices\/press-office\/fact-sheets\/2026\/february\/fact-sheet-us-taiwan-agreement-reciprocal-trade\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">also plans<\/a> to purchase over $84 billion in U.S. goods from 2025 to 2029, including liquefied natural gas and crude oil, as well as aircraft and power equipment. <\/p>\n<p>The office of the U.S. Trade Representative said that Taiwan had committed to &#8220;resolve longstanding non-tariff barriers,&#8221; such as accepting U.S. vehicles built to U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards without any additional requirements. <\/p>\n<p>This deal was first announced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/15\/us-taiwan-chips-deal-china.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in January<\/a> when Taiwanese chip and technology companies committed to invest at least $250 billion in production capacity in the U.S., backed by an equal amount of government credit &#8220;to facilitate additional investment by Taiwanese enterprises.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>However, Taiwan and the U.S. have shared differing views on chip supply chains.<\/p>\n<p>The goal is to bring 40% of Taiwan&#8217;s entire semiconductor supply chain to the U.S. during U.S. President , Commerce\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/15\/us-taiwan-chips-deal-china.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Secretary Howard Lutnick told CNBC<\/a> last month. He also said that Taiwan-based chip companies that don&#8217;t build in the U.S are likely to face a 100% tariff.<\/p>\n<p>However, Taiwan has pushed back on that proposal, telling Washington that moving 40% of the island&#8217;s semiconductor supply chain to the U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/02\/10\/taiwan-chips-us-supply-chain-lutnick-trade-deal.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">was &#8220;impossible,&#8221;<\/a> according to Taipei&#8217;s top tariff trade negotiator.<\/p>\n<p>Vice Premier Cheng Li-chiun told local media that Taiwan&#8217;s semiconductor ecosystem, built over decades, could not simply be relocated.<\/p>\n<p>Taiwan&#8217;s international expansion, including its investments in the U.S., is predicated on the notion that the industry remains&#8217; rooted in Taiwan and continues to expand domestic investments, she said in Mandarin, translated by CNBC.<\/p>\n<p>China, which considers democratically governed Taiwan a part of its territory, had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/21\/china-us-taiwan-deal-semiconductors-chips-supply-chain-trade-deal.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">criticized the January agreement<\/a>, saying that the deal would\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.cn\/tw\/20260121\/645f7407d2fc49739d097aa05c9b77e7\/c.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">&#8220;only drain Taiwan&#8217;s economic interests,&#8221;<\/a> adding that the ruling Democratic Progressive Party was letting the U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepaper.cn\/newsDetail_forward_32431368\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">&#8220;hollow out&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0the island&#8217;s key industry.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Chinese President\u00a0Xi Jinping\u00a0regards Taiwan&#8217;s reunification with the mainland &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gwytb.gov.cn\/topone\/202312\/t20231231_12590901.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a historical inevitability<\/a>.&#8221; Taiwan rejects those claims. <\/p>\n<p>While the U.S. does not have a mutual defense treaty with Taiwan and is not obligated to defend the island, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/96th-congress\/house-bill\/2479\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">1979 Taiwan Relations Act<\/a>\u00a0states the U.S. &#8220;will make available to Taiwan such defense articles and defense services&#8221; as may be necessary to &#8220;enable Taiwan to maintain sufficient self-defense capabilities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. in December <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/12\/18\/us-taiwan-china-arms-sale-.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">approved $11.15 billion<\/a> in arms sales to Taiwan, among its largest deals with the island as it faces growing threats from China, drawing a sharp response from Beijing, with its foreign affairs spokesperson, Guo Jiakun, accusing the U.S. of violating the &#8220;one-China principle.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 CNBC&#8217;s Anniek Bao and Dylan Butts contributed to this story.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"U.S. and Taiwanese flags are seen in San Francisco, California, Jan. 28, 2026.
