Japanese authorities have seized a Chinese \u200cfishing boat and arrested \u2060its captain \u2060for allegedly fleeing inspection in its exclusive economic \u2060zone, an incident that could further inflame tensions between Asia’s top two economies.<\/p>\n
The \u200ccaptain, a \u206047-year-old Chinese national, \u200bis accused of ignoring orders to stop for an on-board inspection on Thursday in waters off southwest Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan’s Fisheries Agency said.<\/p>\n
There were a further 10 people on board at the time, the agency said. While \u2060Japan has \u200bseized \u200bfishing vessels \u200cfrom South Korea and Taiwan in recent \u200cyears, the incident is the first involving \u200ba vessel from China since 2022 and comes against the \u2060backdrop of a major diplomatic dispute between the countries.<\/p>\n
“We \u2060will continue to take resolute action in our enforcement activities to prevent and deter illegal fishing operations by foreign vessels,” Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara told a regular press conference on Friday.<\/p>\n
