{"id":466066,"date":"2026-02-13T10:27:19","date_gmt":"2026-02-13T10:27:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/466066\/"},"modified":"2026-02-13T10:27:19","modified_gmt":"2026-02-13T10:27:19","slug":"southern-nevada-family-concerned-about-cougar-prowling-around-property","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/466066\/","title":{"rendered":"Southern Nevada family concerned about cougar prowling around property"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text | article-text\">SANDY VALLEY (<a href=\"http:\/\/fox5vegas.com\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"http:\/\/fox5vegas.com\/\">FOX5<\/a>) \u2014 A Southern Nevada family concerned about a cougar prowling around their property reached out to Nevada wildlife officials for help to remove the big cat. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Mountain lions are prevalent throughout Southern Nevada but are generally elusive, according to Nevada Department of Wildlife officials. FOX5 has reported on sightings across the Valley in areas like Summerlin, Henderson and Mt. Charleston. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">For the past couple of months, a mountain lion has been seen and heard around several acres belonging to a Sandy Valley family&#8211; and the family has found the remains of a cat and a dog that they suspect the cat had eaten. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Jack tells FOX5 he\u2019s had scary encounters, even one outside his window. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cThat giant cat just let out a big huff, and the whole window just fogged up from its hot breath,\u201d Jack said, telling FOX5 that the big cat had a staring match with his two house cats. \u201cA huge, giant cat is just sitting there on the other side of the window,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The first time he saw the cat, he said it was eight feet away. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cI was walking to my mom\u2019s house, and all of a sudden, I heard this growl. All I saw were these big, giant eyes,\u201d Jack said, noting he backed away slowly. \u201cWhat I\u2019m worried about is that it\u2019s going to attack one of us, or it\u2019s going to attack one of the dogs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Jack\u2019s mother emailed NDOW: \u201cIs there some way that this kitten can be caught and relocated?\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">NDOW officials explained to her and FOX5 that they evaluate a cat\u2019s behavior when complaints come in, but relocation is not a simple scenario. A cougar has a \u201cterritory\u201d that ranges up to 150 miles. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cA big cat or other predator will travel hundreds of miles to get back where it came from,\u201d said Doug Nielsen with NDOW. \u201cThe concept of moving a predator from point A to point B and it\u2019s going to live happily ever after is great for a made-for-TV movie&#8211; but in the real-life world, in the world of wildlife management, that doesn\u2019t really work most of the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Even if NDOW relocated the cougar, it may infringe on another big cat\u2019s territory, causing unnecessary conflict, he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">How can the family drive the cougar away? <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cWhen we get a report of a mountain lion that might be on the edge of the valley or in a community, our first hope is that it turns around and goes right back where it came from. Give it space,\u201d Nielsen said. \u201cIf you\u2019re feeling threatened or you\u2019re fairly close to it, then make yourself look as big as you can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">There are precautions that folks can take to make a property less attractive: keep pets indoors and remove outside pet food.
