\n\tAmid a rising storm of angst over AI<\/a> video, Disney<\/a> fired off a cease and desist letter to China\u2019s ByteDance<\/a> for stocking its new Seedance 2.0<\/a> platform \u201cwith a pirated library of Disney\u2019s copyrighted characters\u201d as the platform treats Disney IP from Star Wars to Marvel to Family Guy as if it was \u201cfree public domain clip art.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAxios was the first to report the letter from Disney, which follows Seedance 2.0 backlash from the Motion Picture Association and, earlier today, the Human Artistry Campaign<\/a>, whose members include SAG-AFTRA<\/a>\u00a0and the DGA.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cByteDance\u2019s virtual smash-and-grab of Disney\u2019s IP is willful, pervasive, and totally unacceptable,\u201d\u00a0wrote the entertainment giant\u2019s counsel.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Human Artistry Campaign called Seedance 2.0, which the parent company of TikTok launched this week, \u201can attack on every creator around the world. Stealing human creators\u2019 work in an attempt to replace them with AI-generated slop is destructive to our culture: stealing isn\u2019t innovation.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSeedance triggered the outrage in record time after a series of highly authentic-looking deepfakes<\/a> based on copyrighted Hollywood film and TV IP went viral, led by a Tom Cruise vs Brad Pitt fight scene<\/a> and including alternative endings to the series\u00a0Stranger Things and much more.<\/p>\n

\n\tOn Wednesday, the\u00a0MPA\u00a0called on ByteDance<\/a> \u201cto immediately cease its infringing activity.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIn a single day, the Chinese AI service Seedance 2.0 has engaged in unauthorized use of U.S. copyrighted works on a massive scale. By launching a service that operates without meaningful safeguards against infringement, ByteDance is disregarding well-established copyright law that protects the rights of creators and underpins millions of American jobs,\u201d said the studio trade group.<\/p>\n

\n\tDisney sent a similar cease and desist letter to Google in December and, as Deadline reported recently, its tools including Gemini and Nano Banana, have now started denying prompts that contain Disney-owned characters.<\/p>\n
