He also has been sued.<\/p>\n<p>Via WKYC, the family of Gabriella Perp\u00e9tuo <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wkyc.com\/article\/news\/local\/ohio\/family-sues-former-ohio-state-nfl-player-darron-lee-death-of-girlfriend-gabriella-perpetuo\/530-6ac4ff18-0f22-4a0c-996e-1f0a283b7438\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">has filed a $50 million wrongful-death lawsuit<\/a> against Lee.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s another available form of justice when the worst possible injustice \u2014 the termination of someone\u2019s life \u2014 occurs. And the standard of proof in the civil justice system (preponderance of the evidence; basically, 51-49) is much lower than it is in criminal court (beyond a reasonable doubt).<\/p>\n<p>The best example comes from the O.J. Simpson case. Acquitted (somehow) for double murder in 1995, a jury later entered a $33.5 million verdict against Simpson in the wrongful-death lawsuit.<\/p>\n<p>Lee was denied bail earlier this week. The prosecutor said that the case against him includes multiple aggravating factors that <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsports.com\/nfl\/profootballtalk\/rumor-mill\/news\/prosecutor-suggests-death-penalty-could-be-in-play-for-darron-lee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">could justify the death penalty<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A first-round pick in 2016, Lee <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.spotrac.com\/nfl\/player\/_\/id\/18968\/darron-lee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">made more than $10 million<\/a> during his NFL career, playing three years with the Jets, one with the Chiefs, and one with the Bills.
