GRAND RAPIDS \u2013 In what could be described as a sight for sore eyes, top Detroit Red Wings prospect Carter Mazur<\/a> is back on the ice with the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Mazur hasn\u2019t seen game action<\/a> since October 24. He suffered a serious knee injury during a Griffins practice.<\/p>\n

UPDATE: Carter Mazur sustained a lower-body injury during practice earlier this week and is being evaluated.<\/p>\n

Now, before you go penciling the feisty forward into a spot on the Red Wings\u2019 playoff roster, maybe take a breath.<\/p>\n

These are baby steps for Mazur.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, he\u2019s still a few weeks away,\u201d Griffins\u2019 coach Dan Watson<\/a> said after Saturday\u2019s practice session. \u201cIt is nice to see him out there when there\u2019s no contact. More of a skill-based practice today.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf there\u2019s any contact, he wouldn\u2019t be out there at all. It\u2019s nice to see him in hockey equipment, though.\u201d<\/p>\n

Red Wings Hold High Hopes For Mazur<\/p>\n

There\u2019s always been high hopes for the tenacity that Mazur could add to the Detroit lineup. But bad luck has plagued him throughout his pro career.<\/p>\n

He was limited to 20 games with the Griffins last season through injury. His NHL debut<\/a> ended after two shifts thanks to a dislocated elbow. That injury brought about an end to his season.<\/p>\n

Mazur was off to a great start this season. He counted four goals and two assists in five games when the injury bug bit again.<\/p>\n

Knowing the injury hell their teammate has been through, the Griffins do their best to lift Mazur\u2019s spirits and remind him that he always remains one of them.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think anyone who has a long-term injury, we really talk about staying around the team, don\u2019t isolate yourself,\u201d Watson said. \u201cCome in and do therapy when other guys are doing therapy, as much as you can, so you\u2019re around the team.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s still such a close bond here that guys take care of other guys. But yeah, everyone\u2019s checking in on him, making sure he\u2019s okay. He\u2019s at the arena every single day, so we see him every single day. It\u2019s just a different capacity.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut you know, he\u2019s been through it enough now that he understands that it\u2019s a process, and when he comes back, hopefully he\u2019s stronger.\u201d<\/p>\n
