{"id":470427,"date":"2026-02-15T17:06:07","date_gmt":"2026-02-15T17:06:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/470427\/"},"modified":"2026-02-15T17:06:07","modified_gmt":"2026-02-15T17:06:07","slug":"maxwells-clemency-pitch-can-epstein-accomplice-talk-her-way-out-of-prison-ghislaine-maxwell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/470427\/","title":{"rendered":"Maxwell\u2019s clemency pitch: can Epstein accomplice talk her way out of prison? | Ghislaine Maxwell"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">When <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/ghislaine-maxwell\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ghislaine Maxwell<\/a> refused to testify before Congress last week, she nonetheless insisted on her willingness to help.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Maxwell, who was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2022\/jun\/28\/ghislaine-maxwell-sentencing-sex-trafficking-epstein\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">convicted<\/a> of helping <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/jeffrey-epstein\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jeffrey Epstein<\/a> draw teenage girls into a world of sexual abuse, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/feb\/09\/ghislaine-maxwell-congress-deposition\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dangled the prospect<\/a> of revealing truth before Congress and American public \u2013 so long as she was freed from jail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIf this committee and the American public truly want to hear the unfiltered truth about what happened, there is a straightforward path. Ms Maxwell is prepared to speak fully and honestly if granted clemency by President Trump,\u201d her attorney, David Oskar Marcus, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/domarkus\/status\/2020882509525893536\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow\">said<\/a>. \u201cOnly she can provide the complete account. Some may not like what they hear, but the truth matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">She added: \u201cFor example, both President Trump and President Clinton are innocent of any wrongdoing. Ms Maxwell alone can explain why, and the public is entitled to that explanation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">While <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/donaldtrump\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s team has denied he was considering such an act of mercy for Maxwell, her pitch rekindled discourse on whether a presidential pardon, or commutation of her sentence, were potentially on the table.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Trump for months has dealt with political blowback over his administration\u2019s handling of the Epstein files, as he waffled on campaign trail promises to release all documents amid growing attention on his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/sep\/14\/epstein-birthday-book-donald-trump\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">prior association<\/a> with him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Legal veterans told the Guardian that any sort of clemency for Maxwell \u2013 albeit hypothetical at this point \u2013 would likely do little to provide insight into Epstein\u2019s crimes. Attorneys for Epstein\u2019s victims, meanwhile, have condemned her clemency pitch, with one calling it \u201ctwisted\u201d and cast doubt on her motivations, and ability, to tell \u201cthe truth\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cShe\u2019s saying, look, what I\u2019ll do is: I\u2019ll clear you, Mr President Trump, I\u2019ll clear whomever, if you let me out,\u2019\u201d said RJ Drelling, a defense attorney and former prosecutor in Los Angeles. \u201cIf she\u2019s saying, \u2018Get me out of jail in exchange for this information\u2019, it obviously undermines any kind of credibility for her and any information she provides.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIt\u2019s kind of a game of chess between her and the administration, where she\u2019s saying, \u2018Help me out, and I can help you. Don\u2019t help me out, and maybe I can hurt you,\u2019\u201d Drelling said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cObviously, the president doesn\u2019t want to be seen granting clemency to someone who\u2019s convicted of an extremely serious series of crimes. But at the same time, he\u2019s got to be worried that he could do or say something that could really even more negatively impact his reputation and his standing with the American public.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Neama Rahmani, founder of West Coast Trial Lawyers, said: \u201cAs a former federal prosecutor, I think Maxwell\u2019s proposal is distasteful, actually downright shameful, but there\u2019s nothing unlawful about it. She realizes now that her supreme court petition has been denied, she is going to spend decades in federal prison unless she can get a pardon or sentence commuted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Rahmani added: \u201cShe theoretically has potential habeas argument, but I think it\u2019s very unlikely that she\u2019ll be able to collaterally attack her conviction. This is her easiest way out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Aside from credibility concerns \u2013 which also stem from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-sdny\/pr\/ghislaine-maxwell-charged-manhattan-federal-court-conspiring-jeffrey-epstein-sexually\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">prior allegations<\/a> that Maxwell lied under oath \u2013 clemency would not guarantee she would tell everything she knows.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWhen it comes to presidential clemency, I\u2019m not aware of any conditional pardons or clemency that have previously been issued,\u201d said Eric Faddis, a defense attorney at the Law Offices of Eric Faddis, and a former felony prosecutor. \u201cWhat is the legal mechanism by which you can go back to Maxwell and say, \u2018Hey, you didn\u2019t give us enough. We\u2019re pulling this clemency?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIt doesn\u2019t work like that, so there\u2019s really a question as to how any conditions of a presidential clemency could be enforced.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Attorneys have also noted that information about Epstein\u2019s crimes \u2013 and his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2019\/feb\/06\/justice-department-jeffrey-epstein-attorneys-investigation\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sweetheart deal<\/a> that allowed him to skate federal prosecution in 2008 in exchange for admitting to state-level charges \u2013 could be revealed without Maxwell\u2019s promise of help.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIt\u2019s clear that anything that comes out [from Maxwell] would be so corrupt and tainted that it\u2019s worthless,\u201d said John Day, a defense attorney who previously worked as a prosecutor. \u201cIf you don\u2019t see that, you\u2019re ignoring the realities of this case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe way to get to the truth is to follow the trails of victim statements [and] unredacted documents, and find out who was trying to protect all these rich and powerful men through the redactions,\u201d Day said. \u201cStay with the victims. Look through the records. Ask who is protecting whom still, and [do] not believe anything that Maxwell says, because her story is up for sale. There\u2019s a price on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Lawyers representing Epstein\u2019s victims see Maxwell\u2019s offer as little more than self-interested horse-trading.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cGhislaine Maxwell invoking the fifth while dangling the promise of testimony in exchange for a pardon is not courage or cooperation \u2013 it is leverage. This is a convicted sex trafficker with a documented history of deception attempting to trade on information she has withheld for years in order to secure personal freedom,\u201d said Spencer Kuvin of Goldlaw, who has represented numerous Epstein victims.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cConditioning \u2018the truth\u2019 on clemency from Donald Trump looks less like a search for justice and more like the latest maneuver in a long pattern of manipulation,\u201d he also said in a statement. \u201cVictims have waited far too long to see accountability to accept another transactional offer wrapped in the language of disclosure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Jennifer Freeman of Marsh Law Firm, who represents Epstein victim Maria Farmer, voiced similar sentiments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIt was no surprise that Ghislaine Maxwell \u2013 a convicted sex trafficker and felon who has been previously accused of repeatedly lying under oath \u2013 is now attempting to trade her version of her involvement in crimes against young women and girls, for a pardon or other leniency,\u201d she said. \u201cMaxwell\u2019s statements are not to be trusted, designed to best suit her twisted agenda and continued concealment of her wrongdoings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cSurvivors of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/jeffrey-epstein\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jeffrey Epstein<\/a> and Maxwell deserve justice for the abuse and trafficking they have endured, which would be thwarted by crediting Maxwell, offering her clemency, pardoning her, commuting her sentence, or in any way limiting the hard fought conviction imposed after trial by a jury of her peers, and sentence delivered by a an experienced, well-regarded judge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Maxwell\u2019s team did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
