\n\tIf you ask Ari Aster<\/a>\u2018s dad, the \u201cHereditary\u201d director should leave screenwriting to someone else.<\/p>\n

\n\tDuring a recent appearance on the \u201cWTF with Marc Maron<\/a>\u201d podcast, Aster said his father suggested he stick to directing only after his 2023 film \u201cBeau Is Afraid<\/a>\u201d underperformed at the box office.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhen \u2018Beau Is Afraid\u2019 flopped, my dad did tell me, \u2018Uh, maybe you shouldn\u2019t write the next one,\u2019\u201d Aster said. \u201cHe might\u2019ve been right.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDespite the advice, Aster wrote his follow-up feature, \u201cEddington<\/a>,\u201d which is currently in theaters. A24 and Aster are hoping for a win from the small-town dramedy starring Joaquin Phoenix and Pedro Pascal after \u201cBeau\u201d grossed $12 million worldwide against a $35 million budget.<\/p>\n

\n\tAster said he was \u201cpretty sad\u201d about the poor critical and commercial reception of \u201cBeau,\u201d but added that a few stray messages of support helped him deal with the disappointment.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI was pretty sad that it was, like, so maligned,\u201d he recalled. \u201cThere are a lot of people who reached out to tell me that they loved it\u2026that helped, but yeah, no, it was a bummer because it was a huge, you know, it lost money, and critically, I wouldn\u2019t say it was, like, reviled, but it was definitely, like, there was no consensus whatsoever.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe continued, \u201cAll these things you take away after you release a film and you\u2019re like, \u2018OK, it\u2019s out of my hands now, I can\u2019t really avoid people\u2019s reactions, responses.\u2019 It\u2019s like, you know, you kind of learn something\u2026No matter what the response, you\u2019re proud of for sticking with [your choice], and then certain things where you\u2019re like, \u2018Eh, I\u2019m not sure if it was worth losing that much of the audience for that decision.\u2019 I think I ejected a number of people from the theater.
