{"id":471928,"date":"2026-02-16T12:18:12","date_gmt":"2026-02-16T12:18:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/471928\/"},"modified":"2026-02-16T12:18:12","modified_gmt":"2026-02-16T12:18:12","slug":"bekarch-converts-disused-workshop-into-skylight-topped-apartment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/471928\/","title":{"rendered":"BekArch converts disused workshop into skylight-topped apartment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Architecture studio BekArch has converted an old <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/bakeries\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bakery<\/a> building into an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/apartments\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">apartment<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/prague\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Prague<\/a>, Czech Republic.<\/p>\n<p>Located in the city&#8217;s Vr\u0161ovice neighbourhood, the studio space was originally a neglected workshop, located in the inner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/courtyards\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">courtyard<\/a> of a bakery.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2291064 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/bakery-residential-conversion-bekarch-prague-czech-republic-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_14-852x1103.jpeg\" alt=\"Bakery conversion by Bek Arch in Prague\" width=\"1826\" height=\"2364\"  \/>BekArch has converted a bakery courtyard into a studio apartment<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We saw hidden potential in this space,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bekarch.cz\/en\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">BekArch<\/a> architects Jan Bek and Martin K\u0159\u00ed\u017e told Dezeen. &#8220;We aimed to transform this &#8216;invisible&#8217; and overlooked area into a fully functional and high-quality part of the residential building.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The inspiration came from the opportunity to give new life to an old, distinctive structure and to turn it from a storage-like void into an inspiring place,&#8221; they continued.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2295130 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/bakery-residential-conversion-bekarch-prague-czech-republic-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_4-852x1193..jpeg\" alt=\"Bakery residential conversion by BekArch\" width=\"1688\" height=\"2364\"  \/>A metal mesh bike display features in the middle of the space<\/p>\n<p>The resulting one-bedroom apartment measures 58 square metres.<\/p>\n<p>In the centre of the living area, the studio installed a metal mesh <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/bicycles\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bicycle<\/a> display as a &#8220;symbol of the inhabitants&#8217; lifestyle&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The exposed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/concrete\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">concrete<\/a> beam ceiling and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/skylights\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">skylights<\/a> of the old workshop were retained, while rebar was repurposed for custom door handles, maintaining the building&#8217;s original industrial features.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2295145 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/bakery-residential-conversion-bekarch-prague-czech-republic-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_5-852x1102..jpeg\" alt=\"Bakery conversion by BekArch\" width=\"1827\" height=\"2364\"  \/>A large sliding door leads out to the apartment&#8217;s courtyard<\/p>\n<p>The interior is arranged into zones rather than enclosed by solid walls and includes a bedroom with a walk-in wardrobe and a bathroom with a walk-in shower.<\/p>\n<p>The studio replaced the doors with large windows and installed new skylight glazing, which allowed the room to be filled with daylight.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2026\/01\/02\/bindloss-dawes-tractor-shed-conversion-dorset\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/sq-the-tractor-shed-bindloss-dawes_dezeen_2364_col_0-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"The Tractor Shed Bindloss Dawes\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Bindloss Dawes converts former tractor shed into light-filled rural home\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The skylights essentially drew a map of the interior. We positioned the main living areas in the spaces flooded with overhead light, while the areas in between serve as circulation or quieter zones&#8221;, the architects explained.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The intensity of the light then naturally defined the zones: under the skylights and near the window, active living areas emerged, while the less illuminated corners became service spaces&#8221;, they continued.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In this way, the layout was shaped not by walls, but by light&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2295270 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/bakery-residential-conversion-bekarch-prague-czech-republic-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_6-852x568.j.jpeg\" alt=\"Bakery conversion by BekArch\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"  \/>A sliding door leads out to the apartment&#8217;s courtyard<\/p>\n<p>The architects opened the space to the courtyard by installing a large sliding door, which leads out from the living area.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The lift-and-slide portal allows the studio&#8217;s living space to extend onto the terrace during the summer months&#8221;, BekArch said.<\/p>\n<p>The studio finished the floor in Cemflow, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/cement\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cement<\/a>-based flooring system, to &#8220;reference Prague&#8217;s historic apartments&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2295300 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/bakery-residential-conversion-bekarch-prague-czech-republic-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_15-852x568..jpeg\" alt=\"Bakery residential conversion by BekArch\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"  \/>Skylights fill the space with natural light<\/p>\n<p>Spruce bioboard, a wood\u2011based material, features in several areas of the space, including in the kitchen, where it&#8217;s paired with a stainless steel backsplash and countertop, and in the bathroom on the vanity top and washbasin.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The spruce bio-board brings natural grain and warmth to the interior, visually softening the rawness of the concrete ceiling&#8221;, BekArch said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In contrast, the polished Cemflow cast floor, with its uniformity and visual clarity, unifies the entire space and provides a neutral, yet technically perfect, canvas that allows the furniture pieces to stand out.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Other conversions recently featured on Dezeen include the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/09\/10\/wendover-police-station-housing-conversion\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">conversion of a London police station into rental apartments<\/a> and an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2026\/01\/21\/sampling-augustines-garden-conversion\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">industrial site in Latvia turned into a residential complex<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The photography is by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/byondrej\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ond\u0159ej Holub<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>            <script async src=\"\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Architecture studio BekArch has converted an old bakery building into an apartment in Prague, Czech Republic.
