{"id":471964,"date":"2026-02-16T12:46:07","date_gmt":"2026-02-16T12:46:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/471964\/"},"modified":"2026-02-16T12:46:07","modified_gmt":"2026-02-16T12:46:07","slug":"germany-calls-on-france-to-increase-defence-spending-germany","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/471964\/","title":{"rendered":"Germany calls on France to increase defence spending | Germany"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">France needs to boost its defence spending to make European self-sufficiency a reality, Germany\u2019s foreign minister has said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">As European powers increasingly acknowledge they may be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/jan\/31\/european-defence-disarray-future-nato-trump\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">left on their own for their defence<\/a> as the transatlantic relationship comes under strain, Johann Wadephul said Paris needed to put its money where its mouth was.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cHe repeatedly and correctly refers to our pursuit of European sovereignty,\u201d Wadephul said of the French president, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/emmanuel-macron\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Emmanuel Macron<\/a>, in an interview with the German public broadcaster Deutschlandfunk. \u201cAnyone who talks about it needs to act accordingly in their own country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">European countries are facing pressure to enhance their defence capabilities as anxiety increases about whether Washington would use its military might to come to the aid of its Nato partners in the event of an attack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Nato member states pledged at a summit last June to increase defence spending to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nato.int\/en\/what-we-do\/introduction-to-nato\/defence-expenditures-and-natos-5-commitment\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">5% of GDP by 2035<\/a>, but Wadephul said progress towards that goal had been falling short.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cUnfortunately, efforts in the French republic have also been insufficient to achieve this so far,\u201d he said. \u201cFrance, too, needs to do what we are doing here amid tough discussions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a data-name=\"placeholder\" href=\"https:\/\/interactive.guim.co.uk\/uploader\/embed\/2026\/02\/nato_spend\/giv-325545VEhZnMY5ybX\/\" class=\"dcr-1eupayo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nato spending as a proportion of GDP chart<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Germany last year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/mar\/14\/friedrich-merz-germany-greens-support-defence-funding-plan\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">exempted most defence expenditures<\/a> from its constitutional \u201cdebt brake\u201d and it has earmarked more than \u20ac500bn for defence between 2025 and 2029.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">France, which is the midst of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/feb\/02\/france-passes-budget-after-wrangling-no-confidence-motions-sebastien-lecornu\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bitter battles over its public spending<\/a>, places third in the EU in terms of its debt burden as a proportion of GDP, after Greece and Italy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Wadephul\u2019s criticism comes amid friction in the Franco-German alliance, traditionally seen as the driving force in EU cooperation. Germany has rejected repeatedly Macron\u2019s calls for pooled debt to boost investment, while there is discord between Paris and Berlin over plans to build a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/dec\/02\/production-of-french-german-fighter-jet-threatened-by-rivalries-chief-executive-says\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">next-generation European fighter jet<\/a> and seal an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/jan\/09\/eu-states-back-controversial-mercosur-deal-with-latin-american-countries\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">EU trade deal<\/a> with a group of South American countries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">On the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/feb\/13\/us-not-powerful-enough-to-go-it-alone-merz-tells-munich-conference\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">opening day of the Munich Security Conference<\/a> last week, Germany\u2019s chancellor, Friedrich Merz, warned of the threat Russia posed to Europe and attempted to draw the US back into firm mutual security commitments, even as he acknowledged ties were in need of repair.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIn the era of great power rivalry, even the United States will not be powerful enough to go it alone,\u201d he said. \u201cDear friends, being a part of Nato is not only Europe\u2019s competitive advantage. It is also the United States\u2019 competitive advantage. However, the prospect of Europe pro-actively seeking its own nuclear defence capabilities beyond US protection laid bare differences within Germany\u2019s ruling coalition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Wadephul, a member of Merz\u2019s Christian Democratic Union (CDU), voiced caution about the prospect of Europe mounting its own more robust nuclear defence, saying: \u201cThere are enough atomic weapons in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He told German public television late on Sunday that \u201cno one in Washington is questioning\u201d whether the US would use its own nuclear arsenal to defend Europe if necessary, and he warned against creating that impression with a debate questioning the US protective shield.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Germany\u2019s vice-chancellor, Lars Klingbeil, said Berlin would continue to rely on Nato\u2019s nuclear deterrence system and had no plans to acquire its own atomic weapons \u2013 an option it renounced under existing treaties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He welcomed the talks with France about joining its nuclear umbrella. \u201cWe\u2019ll see what the outcome is,\u201d Klingbeil, a Social Democrat, told the German news agency dpa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">However, the senior Christian Democrat Armin Laschet said the proposal risked sending a message to Washington that Germany was voluntarily renouncing the US protective shield. And he noted that France would insist on full control over how its nuclear arsenal was used.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cHe [Macron] will not give the German chancellor a say in this nuclear armament issue,\u201d Laschet said on public television.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Thomas R\u00f6wekamp, the CDU chair of the Bundestag defence committee, said Germany must take on more responsibility for European security but not in an ill-advised drive to replace US nuclear guarantees.
