\n\tChinese tech giant ByteDance<\/a> has committed to strengthening safeguards for its controversial AI video generation tool Seedance<\/a> 2.0 following a barrage of cease-and-desist letters from major Hollywood studios and condemnation from industry guilds, according to BBC News.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe TikTok parent company told BBC<\/a> on Monday that it \u201crespects intellectual property rights and we have heard the concerns regarding Seedance 2.0,\u201d adding that it is \u201ctaking steps to strengthen current safeguards as we work to prevent the unauthorised use of intellectual property and likeness by users.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tVariety has reached out to ByteDance about what safeguards are being put in place. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe pledge comes after Disney sent a cease-and-desist letter<\/a> Friday accusing ByteDance of conducting a \u201cvirtual smash-and-grab\u201d of the Mouse House\u2019s IP, alleging the platform had pre-loaded Seedance with what it characterized as a \u201cpirated library\u201d of copyrighted characters from Marvel, Star Wars and other Disney franchises. The letter claims ByteDance is treating coveted Disney IP \u201cas if Disney\u2019s coveted intellectual property were free public domain clip art.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tParamount followed suit Saturday with its own cease-and-desist, targeting both Seedance and ByteDance\u2019s Seedream image generator. Gabriel Miller, Paramount Skydance\u2019s head of intellectual property, accused the company of \u201cblatant infringement\u201d of properties including \u201cSouth Park,\u201d \u201cStar Trek,\u201d \u201cThe Godfather,\u201d \u201cSpongeBob SquarePants,\u201d \u201cTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,\u201d \u201cDora the Explorer\u201d and \u201cAvatar: The Last Airbender.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Motion Picture Association, representing Warner Bros Discovery, Paramount, Netflix and other major studios, issued a strongly worded statement <\/a>Thursday demanding ByteDance \u201cimmediately cease its infringing activity.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIn a single day, the Chinese AI service Seedance 2.0 has engaged in unauthorized use of U.S. copyrighted works on a massive scale,\u201d said MPA chair and CEO Charles Rivkin. \u201cBy launching a service that operates without meaningful safeguards against infringement, ByteDance is disregarding well-established copyright law that protects the rights of creators and underpins millions of American jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSAG-AFTRA condemned what it called \u201cblatant infringement\u201d that includes \u201cthe unauthorized use of our members\u2019 voices and likenesses.\u201d The guild added: \u201cThis is unacceptable and undercuts the ability of human talent to earn a livelihood.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Human Artistry Campaign, a coalition backed by Hollywood unions and creative organizations, characterized the platform as \u201can attack on every creator around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tLaunched Feb. 12, Seedance 2.0 generates 15-second video clips from text prompts, similar to OpenAI\u2019s Sora. The platform has drawn praise for its realism but quickly sparked controversy as users posted AI-generated content featuring recognizable Hollywood properties.<\/p>\n

\n\tAmong the most widely circulated examples was a video posted by filmmaker and VFX artist Rauiri Robinson showing \u2018Tom Cruise\u2019 and \u2018Brad Pitt\u2019 fighting on a rooftop, which went viral last week and prompted the MPA\u2019s initial condemnation Thursday.<\/p>\n

\n\tOther videos circulating online purportedly created with the tool include Star Wars characters Anakin Skywalker and Rey engaged in lightsaber combat, and Spider-Man battling Captain America in New York, according to BBC News and multiple trade reports.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe controversy has extended beyond Hollywood. The Japanese government has launched an investigation into potential copyright violations after AI-generated videos of popular anime characters appeared online, BBC News reported.<\/p>\n
