Demi Lovato\u2019s decision to cancel a string of shows<\/a> on her upcoming It\u2019s Not That Deep Tour has set off alarm bells amongst worried pals.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, February 10, the 33-year-old pop star, who has been open about her struggles with substance abuse, penned a message to fans on her Instagram Story, explaining that she had \u201coverextended\u201d herself and needed to \u201cadjust\u201d her concert schedule to \u201cprotect\u201d her health.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe insists that she\u2019s making this choice because she\u2019s sober and wants to protect her peace,\u201d a source tells Star. \u201cEveryone is being supportive of this because it\u2019s true. The worst thing someone in her position can do is overextend themselves and get burned out, but that hasn\u2019t stopped the whispers.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2018, Lovato suffered a near-fatal drug overdose<\/a> that left her in the hospital for two weeks, during which time, the \u201cSober\u201d singer revealed in her 2021 documentary Dancing With the Devil, she suffered a heart attack and three strokes.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith Demi\u2019s history of addiction, it\u2019s very hard for people in her life not to immediately panic and think the worst,\u201d Star\u2019s source admits. \u201cHer friends are trying hard not to jump to conclusions, but they can\u2019t help feeling protective of her.\u201d<\/p>\n

And for good reason.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey know how sensitive she is and how much the pressure of touring can get to her, so they will definitely be keeping a close eye on her,\u201d adds the source. \u201cShe\u2019s opened herself up to a lot of speculation with this and more scrutiny when she does get up on stage, which really is the last thing she needs.\u201d<\/p>\n
