The reason: he wants to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/travel\/2024\/04\/19\/cabin-baggage-packing-tips-uae-travel-rain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/travel\/2024\/04\/19\/cabin-baggage-packing-tips-uae-travel-rain\/\">travel frequently<\/a> and spend more time with his family.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-1-ZKS2EBI275HZRDVQD6MBT63DEE\">Mr Alansary has taken a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/uae\/2024\/08\/29\/uaes-freelancing-industry-is-growing-rapidly-but-financial-challenges-remain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/uae\/2024\/08\/29\/uaes-freelancing-industry-is-growing-rapidly-but-financial-challenges-remain\/\">freelance licence<\/a> and takes on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/money\/2025\/03\/18\/uae-jobs-talent-salaries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/money\/2025\/03\/18\/uae-jobs-talent-salaries\/\">consulting jobs<\/a>. He works for two to three companies a few days a week now, but on his own terms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-3-GXAA37I27ZHKPL4KVMDA7BWMZ4\">Micro-retiring is a term used to describe the practice whereby employees take planned, extended breaks from their professional duties, often through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/uae\/2025\/03\/11\/how-uae-professionals-are-rethinking-sabbaticals-from-mini-mbas-to-year-long-career-breaks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/uae\/2025\/03\/11\/how-uae-professionals-are-rethinking-sabbaticals-from-mini-mbas-to-year-long-career-breaks\/\">sabbaticals or unpaid leave<\/a>, typically ranging from several weeks to several months or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/money\/2021\/11\/27\/can-i-resign-from-my-job-during-probation-under-the-new-uae-labour-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/money\/2021\/11\/27\/can-i-resign-from-my-job-during-probation-under-the-new-uae-labour-law\/\">resigning from employment<\/a> with the intention of returning to the workforce later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-5-XQ7G27VICNBMPM76PGKEQ7RMAM\">\u201cIt&#8217;s a lot of pressure to be in such senior roles for a long time. I also want to spend more time with my wife and kids,\u201d he says. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-6-UMPE5KGK5JFT3HDC2LEVQIVRJQ\">\u201cBut I am used to getting a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/money\/2025\/05\/20\/dubai-salaries-wages-chief-executive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/money\/2025\/05\/20\/dubai-salaries-wages-chief-executive\/\">consistent salary<\/a> for many years, which gave me a sense of security. However, I&#8217;m not making much less than what I used to on a full-time job.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-8-JWZAWFHELNFMHFJYXRTUHOGGT4\">Although the lack of a stable income stream worries Mr Alansary, the freedom of this lifestyle offsets it. He depends on his savings and investments to fund his expenses but wonders how long he can sustain this lifestyle. <\/p>\n<p>Banks\u2019 lack of approval<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-11-BHX4O5UJWRCGZDFCHL7UHIZACM\">However, banks do not understand this trend, Mr Alansary complains. When seeking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/money\/2024\/10\/09\/look-beyond-the-headline-interest-rate-when-choosing-a-mortgage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/money\/2024\/10\/09\/look-beyond-the-headline-interest-rate-when-choosing-a-mortgage\/\">a loan or mortgage<\/a>, lenders cite a far higher interest rate, even though he earns an income and has savings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-12-O6LLPV6DFZHOXCPMYNZVU5ZBAY\">Mr Alansary says he is thinking of going back to work full time. But while this would make things easier in his dealings with banks, he admits that there&#8217;s lots about his current arrangement he would miss.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-13-BJZ4FIMNGFBPHF3IVKJDTWUZ6I\">\u201cIt\u2019s no longer about the salary, but more about the flexibility and lack of office politics,\u201d he says. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-14-CVZKYL3CANCC5MCMXWP5PNXBEE\">He isn\u2019t alone. Rania Khuffash, a 29-year-old Briton, moved to Dubai from London this year after taking a nearly nine-month break from her advertising and marketing career because she was tired and had not taken a break since she was 21. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-15-JLFUN4V4TFHSNHQ3Z7DDGL3AQE\">\u201cMy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/future\/2025\/04\/24\/uae-expert-warns-of-urgent-need-for-reskilling-as-next-generation-ai-threatens-to-replace-traditional-jobs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/future\/2025\/04\/24\/uae-expert-warns-of-urgent-need-for-reskilling-as-next-generation-ai-threatens-to-replace-traditional-jobs\/\">job was getting repetitive<\/a>, and I needed a change. I was bored and needed a clear mind, so I took some time off to travel. I went to Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia, and switched off. I also visited Jordan for some time to visit extended family. I had money saved up for all this,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-16-UMHILTE4EJGD5JUWQA23SEAEJA\">After three months off, she studied skills such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/future\/technology\/2025\/04\/22\/meta-edits-video-capcut-captions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/future\/technology\/2025\/04\/22\/meta-edits-video-capcut-captions\/\">video editing<\/a> and graphic design. Ms Khuffash also volunteered for a local charity in Jordan \u2013 things she \u201ccouldn\u2019t do while on a full-time job\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-17-MU3TSSDOX5EKNN5M2X2TQVDWMI\">Now, Ms Khuffash wants a full-time job but since she is new to the UAE, freelancing offers her flexibility. Meeting new people and getting out of her comfort zone and usual routine have helped offer more clarity, she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-18-NBD5MYKLUBEFPEBAVRUUY2DI4A\">It\u2019s easier to adapt to working after a sabbatical in a new country. But if you go back to the same job, it can be difficult to adjust to the same routine, Ms Khuffash says.<\/p>\n<p>Reasons for micro-retirement<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-21-ZKEVHRIB6FCEDJW3IDXYMPFJIA\">This year, 10 per cent of Americans are planning to take a micro-retirement, with many funding their break with the help of savings or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/money\/2022\/07\/29\/could-starting-a-side-hustle-be-your-ticket-to-financial-success\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/money\/2022\/07\/29\/could-starting-a-side-hustle-be-your-ticket-to-financial-success\/\">side hustles<\/a> to rest, travel or explore personal and career goals, according to a poll by SideHustles.com, a platform for side jobs and part-time gigs. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-22-4HM6L3F5G5EPHKVRRX7VQYKCFI\">On average, Americans take four months off work for a micro-retirement and aim to save around $15,000 beforehand, according to a poll of 1,000 people in the US.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-23-5MF7MNO73BAWJHPEE6HWYURAKQ\">Their top reasons for taking a micro-retirement include mental health recovery, travel, life experiences and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/lifestyle\/wellbeing\/2025\/07\/04\/cortisol-cocktail-drink-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/lifestyle\/wellbeing\/2025\/07\/04\/cortisol-cocktail-drink-health\/\">relief from work stress<\/a>. Professionals working in areas such as technology, health care, retail, hospitality and finance plan to micro-retire in 2025, the survey found.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-24-DPPHPRHBFBAFHCLOBSDMTOJZFE\">Tanaya S, a 27-year-old Indian living in Dubai, has been working since the age of 22 but wants to micro-retire as she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/economy\/2023\/02\/16\/employee-burnout-at-all-time-high-as-workers-seek-greater-flexibility\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/economy\/2023\/02\/16\/employee-burnout-at-all-time-high-as-workers-seek-greater-flexibility\/\">feels burnt out<\/a> and does not enjoy her current job in sustainability. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-25-7F3BU4FLINEADBJ6RVQCAQKUSU\">\u201cI feel that life can&#8217;t be spent working a 9 to 5. It makes me think about what I want to do with my life and my purpose,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-26-KIJMPXYC6FBTHGQWVJOFE4NEH4\">\u201cThe job I&#8217;m currently in doesn&#8217;t align with where I want to be. I want to focus on my mental and physical health during the break or even consider starting my own business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-27-UUC75PQSPFC43LACCU3WJ4TMKE\">She has savings to cover her necessities, such as therapy, gym and going out with friends, for up to a year. Living with her father and brother helps her to not worry about paying for rent or food.<\/p>\n<p>Focus on purpose and well-being<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-30-DFQOPRHAHNEWBOEAEKUD7NIVRM\">Micro-retiring is still in its early stages across the UAE, but the signs of change are unmistakable. There is growing interest, especially among younger professionals who are rethinking traditional career timelines and placing greater emphasis on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/money\/2025\/02\/11\/gen-z-jobs-salaries-uae\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/money\/2025\/02\/11\/gen-z-jobs-salaries-uae\/\">balance, purpose and well-being<\/a>, according to Pedro Lacerda, country head UAE at recruitment company TASC Group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-31-TLH7YOYW5ZFRVOJ6WHQL2XZYYY\">\u201cThe increasing availability of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/money\/2025\/02\/18\/uae-workplace-benefits-salary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/money\/2025\/02\/18\/uae-workplace-benefits-salary\/\">sabbatical leave<\/a> across UAE organisations reflects a workforce that\u2019s looking for structured ways to pause, recharge and realign, without stepping away from long-term career goals,\u201d he says. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-32-L4QLLPU7MJFGTCJYS6ALOGVVG4\">\u201cGovernment initiatives are also reinforcing this shift. Emirati nationals in federal roles now have the option to take up to a year off at half pay to start a business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-33-Q4OAQNJBGJCE5OOLCMAGYNISLM\">Nicki Wilson, owner and managing director of Genie Recruitment, a Dubai-based consultancy that specialises in hiring across the consumer industry, says there is a significant rise in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/lifestyle\/wellbeing\/2025\/05\/23\/millennial-gen-z-generation-gap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/lifestyle\/wellbeing\/2025\/05\/23\/millennial-gen-z-generation-gap\/\">Gen Z and younger millennials<\/a> taking intentional breaks between jobs, freelancing or opting for a slower paced career path far earlier than previous generations. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-34-S4WC4IRCIBGLXP2D2YI6JXBQQM\">It\u2019s not unusual to see young professionals <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/future\/technology\/2024\/08\/07\/9-to-5-jobs-flexible-jobs-gig-economy-reid-hoffman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/future\/technology\/2024\/08\/07\/9-to-5-jobs-flexible-jobs-gig-economy-reid-hoffman\/\">leaving the 9-5<\/a> to retrain as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/money\/2025\/06\/06\/hongkong-to-uae-wellness-entrepreneurs-dubai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/money\/2025\/06\/06\/hongkong-to-uae-wellness-entrepreneurs-dubai\/\">Pilates instructor<\/a>, a personal trainer, offer coaching or become content creators. A lot of people will utilise their expertise in consultancy or freelancing, too, she points out. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-35-IPTC5GNC7RC5LHKFILZOVIFPBA\">\u201cWe also see a number of very senior profiles who in previous generations may have worked continuously to retirement, adopting a softer approach and taking breaks at their peak to spend time on their own ventures, travel or spend time with family,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not unusual now to see young professionals leaving the 9-5 to retrain as a Pilates instructor, a personal trainer, offer coaching or become content creators<\/p>\n<p>Nicki Wilson,<br \/> owner and managing director, Genie Recruitment<\/p>\n<p>Driving forces<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-38-2RYL5NMQBRALNDHC224ZPWTOL4\">The change is being driven by factors such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/opinion\/comment\/2025\/05\/22\/are-mental-health-conditions-really-being-overdiagnosed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/opinion\/comment\/2025\/05\/22\/are-mental-health-conditions-really-being-overdiagnosed\/\">mental health prioritisation<\/a>, an anti-hustle culture, access to online income through freelance work, a cultural shift towards minimalism, wellness and slow living, and no loyalty to outdated systems, according to Ms Wilson.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-39-RQPOMF54IFH47AGT2YGXYGCQV4\">Some step away after just one to five years of work. Unlike older generations, Gen Z doesn\u2019t feel they need to \u201cearn\u201d rest after decades. If they\u2019re unhappy, they\u2019re more likely to pause early, explore something new or prioritise their well-being. Whereas millennials and boomers may opt to do this later in life after 10 to 15+ years working, she explains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-40-6FLAXQKZJJAPDPMP6KWZU7D2WE\">Micro-retiring is gaining traction as part of a broader shift in how people think about work and life, Mr Lacerda says. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-41-LZLZNRMFHFDW7PWSF3HW7SWDWM\">\u201cYounger professionals have a clear expectation that work should adapt to life, not the other way around,\u201d he says. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-42-FXQBFTQUK5DHFDR4TABX7PV7KM\">\u201cThere\u2019s also growing recognition of the link between employee well-being and business performance. More organisations are looking at policies like sabbaticals and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/money\/6-tips-to-help-you-budget-for-a-career-break-1.1193044\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/money\/6-tips-to-help-you-budget-for-a-career-break-1.1193044\">planned career breaks<\/a> not as risks, but as ways to improve engagement, reduce burnout, and boost long-term productivity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Which sectors are seeing this trend?<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-44-L6KNPBWMQ5C3DNIMV55Y3VNK5Q\">Industries with high pressure and rapid pace are leading the way in micro-retirement, according to recruiters. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-45-4MF6J56TBVC75KKXBOPWXSNONI\">Mr Lacerda cites sectors such as technology, finance, and professional services across the UAE and Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-46-FM5ZZHPBEVEQ7F3H7B4BQZOQ4E\">\u201cFor example, in the UAE\u2019s tech sector, rapid growth combined with intense work demands has led to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/uae\/2023\/02\/05\/uaes-medical-students-at-greater-risk-of-burnout-as-career-pressures-take-toll\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/uae\/2023\/02\/05\/uaes-medical-students-at-greater-risk-of-burnout-as-career-pressures-take-toll\/\">higher burnout risk<\/a>. Similarly, the financial services industry \u2212 including banking and FinTech \u2212 faces strong retention challenges,\u201d he says. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-47-TJUV5L7OAZGDLCUGSLUZGEASIM\">\u201cIn addition, sectors like health care and education, where the emotional and physical demands are high, are beginning to explore more structured sabbatical or phased-retirement options.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-49-FP4A7YXIUBCC3FU6I7LTW5HRR4\">Ms Wilson says micro-retiring is also visible in creative industries like marketing, public relations, design, fashion and content, as well as start-ups, events, hospitality and retail \u2212 where \u201clong hours and high stress\u201d are all contributory factors.<\/p>\n<p>What do micro-retired people do?<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-51-GG3SJQ7RMRDL7DPRIIZ2A3FNWI\">People who choose to micro-retire often use this time to focus on what matters to them, whether that\u2019s personal growth, family or recharging. There is also a \u201cfree-look\u201d period of 30 days, where insurers must\u00a0provide\u00a0a full refund if the buyer wishes to cancel the policy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe illustration should provide for at least two scenarios to illustrate the performance of the product,\u201d said Mr Hodgins. \u201cAll illustrations are required to be signed by the customer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another illustration\u00a0must outline surrender charges\u00a0to ensure they understand the costs of exiting a fixed-term product early.<\/p>\n<p>Illustrations must also be kept updatedand insurers must provide information on the top five investment funds available annually,\u00a0including at least five years&#8217; performance data.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis may be segregated based on the risk appetite of the customer (in which case, the top five funds for each segment must be provided),\u201d said Mr Hodgins.<\/p>\n<p>Product providers must also disclose the ratio of protection benefit to savings benefits.
