I\u2019m Tom Ambrose and I\u2019ll be bringing you all the latest news lines over the next couple of hours.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">We begin with the news that the former US secretary of state Hillary Clinton has accused president Donald Trump of orchestrating a \u201ccover-up\u201d over files related to the sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, according to an interview with the BBC published on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cGet the files out. They are slow-walking it,\u201d Clinton, who is due to testify before a Congressional committee on the issue, told the British broadcaster in an interview in Berlin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Justice Department last month released the latest cache of so-called Epstein files \u2013 more than 3m documents, photos and videos related to its investigation into Epstein, who died from what was determined to be suicide while in custody in 2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Clinton\u2019s husband, former president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/clinton\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Clinton<\/a>, features regularly in the files, but no evidence has come to light implicating either Clinton in criminal activity, AFP reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The couple has been ordered to give closed-door depositions before the House oversight committee, which is investigating Epstein\u2019s connections to powerful figures and how information about his crimes was handled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe will show up but we think it would be better to have it in public,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/hillary-clinton\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hillary Clinton<\/a> told the BBC. \u201cI just want it to be fair,. I want everybody treated the same way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The former secretary of state said she and her husband \u201chave nothing to hide. We have called for the full release of these files repeatedly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In other developments:<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Donald Trump has piled pressure on Ukraine to reach a deal with Russia \u201cfast\u201d before US-brokered talks in Geneva on Tuesday. \u201cUkraine better come to the table, fast,\u201d the US president told reporters onboard Air Force One while en route to Washington. Trump is pushing to end the conflict, which began when Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, but two previous rounds of US-mediated talks in Abu Dhabi did not yield any signs of a breakthrough.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Donald Trump has vented his fury against a green energy deal between the British government and California\u2019s governor, Gavin Newsom, a likely future Democratic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/oct\/26\/gavin-newsom-2028-presidential-race\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">presidential candidate<\/a>. \u201cThe UK\u2019s got enough trouble without getting involved with Gavin Newscum,\u201d Trump said in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/02\/16\/trump-calls-gavin-newsoms-clean-energy-deal-with-the-u-k-inappropriate-00782974?utm_content=politico\/magazine\/Politics&amp;utm_source=flipboard\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an interview with Politico,<\/a> using the derogatory nickname he reserves for Newsom. \u201cGavin is a loser. A few Republicans, out of earshot of the US president\u2019s favoured Fox News, have had the courage to challenge Trump\u2019s diet of tariffs and unpredictability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Trump is committed to the success of the Hungarian prime minister, Viktor Orb\u00e1n, because his leadership is crucial for US national interests, the US secretary of state, Marco Rubio, has said. \u201cPresident Trump is deeply committed to your success, because your success is our success,\u201d Rubio said, standing next to Orb\u00e1n at a joint press conference in Budapest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">John Paulson, a hedge fund billionaire and one of Donald Trump\u2019s earliest Wall Street backers, is planning to move an Ohio manufacturing plant to China despite heavy pushback from employees. But he broke with Trump during the 2016 campaign and sharply criticized his rhetoric and policies once he entered the White House.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe victory can be legal but without moral legitimacy,\u201d Jackson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2017\/01\/simon-says-jesse-jackson-234188\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told Politico<\/a> after Trump defeated Hillary Clinton. \u201cIt was a divisive campaign full of race targeting: People in Mexico were going to be stopped by a wall; Muslims were going to be kept from coming in; there was a whole campaign saying Barack had not been born here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In his Truth Social post, Trump also claimed Jackson had \u201cmuch to do\u201d with Obama\u2019s victory \u201cwithout acknowledgment or credit\u201d from the former president. That is incorrect. Obama has repeatedly credited Jackson\u2019s presidential runs with helping make his own possible. Trump further asserted that Jackson \u201ccould not stand\u201d Obama, without offering evidence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Jackson did privately criticize Obama during the 2008 campaign, in remarks<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/feb\/17\/jesse-jackson-obituary\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> caught on a live microphone<\/a>. \u201cBarack, he is talking down to black people,\u201d Jackson said, adding that he wanted to \u201ccut his nuts off\u201d. Despite renewed US efforts to revive diplomacy, hopes for any sudden breakthrough remain low, with Russia continuing to press maximalist demands on Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">While the Abu Dhabi discussions were largely focused on military ceasefire proposals, the Kremlin spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, said on Monday the Geneva talks would address a \u201cbroader range of issues\u201d, including territorial questions and other demands put forward by Moscow.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"mailto:?subject=Hillary Clinton accuses Trump administration of Epstein files cover-up \u2013 US politics live&amp;body=https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/live\/2026\/feb\/17\/hillary-clinton-trump-epstein-iran-vance-latest-news-updates?CMP=share_btn_url&amp;page=with%3Ablock-699464008f0808ac9a370ee4#block-699464008f0808ac9a370ee4\" type=\"button\" class=\"dcr-1mulgdf\">Share<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Eric Berger<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">When Zohran Mamdani was a New York state assembly member, he sponsored the Stop Fakes Act, which would have prohibited law enforcement from creating fake electronic communication service accounts and collecting users\u2019 account information.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cDigital dragnet surveillance is widespread and dangerous, yet it continues to go unregulated,\u201d Mamdani co-wrote in a 2023 City &amp; State op-ed. \u201cAlthough the NYPD claimed in a Department of Justice report to keep detailed records of its undercover accounts, the department refuses to provide any documentation of its social media surveillance policies or practices for public review.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Stop Fakes act failed, and the battle over the New York police department\u2019s (NYPD) use of surveillance technology has continued. Only now Mamdani is the city\u2019s mayor, and as a democratic socialist backed by an enthusiastic leftwing coalition, his every move is closely scrutinized \u2013 especially when it comes to law enforcement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">On 4 February, the NYPD disclosed that it used \u201cinternet attribution management infrastructure\u201d from the technology company Ntrepid to \u201callow its personnel to safely, securely and covertly conduct investigations and detect possible criminal activity on the internet\u201d. In other words, to create the sort of \u201csock puppet\u201d online identities that Mamdani had once sought to prevent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">As mayor, Mamdani can presumably now stop the police department from using such a tool. But wielding actual power is complex. After previously using anti-police rhetoric, since launching his mayoral candidacy, Mamdandi has been more supportive of the NYPD.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">So the question is: will he neglect an issue he was once passionate about or block investigators from using such technology and risk alienating the police, whose help he needs to run a city with 8.4 million residents?<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cMamdani was a strong partner in the fight against mass surveillance while an assembly member,\u201d said Will Owen, communications director for the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project (Stop), a non-profit that aims to outlaw such practices in New York. \u201cStop will continue to hold him accountable, and we are cautiously optimistic that he will continue that fight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Mamdani\u2019s office did not respond to the Guardian\u2019s requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"mailto:?subject=Hillary Clinton accuses Trump administration of Epstein files cover-up \u2013 US politics live&amp;body=https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/live\/2026\/feb\/17\/hillary-clinton-trump-epstein-iran-vance-latest-news-updates?CMP=share_btn_url&amp;page=with%3Ablock-69945a5e8f089851593a52c9#block-69945a5e8f089851593a52c9\" type=\"button\" class=\"dcr-1mulgdf\">Share<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Iran\u2019s supreme leader warned on Tuesday that US attempts to depose his government would fail, as Washington and Tehran began indirect talks in Geneva on their long-running nuclear dispute amid a US military buildup in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Just a few hours after the negotiations began, Iran\u2019s semi-official Fars news agency reported that parts of the strategic Strait of Hormuz will close for a few hours due to \u201csecurity precautions\u201d while Iran\u2019s elite Revolutionary Guards conduct military drills in the world\u2019s most vital oil export route.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Tehran has in the past threatened to shut down the strait to commercial shipping if it is attacked, a move that would choke off a fifth of global oil flows and drive up crude prices, Reuters reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The US, which joined Israel in bombing Iran\u2019s nuclear facilities in June, has deployed a battle force to the region and US president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/donaldtrump\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump<\/a> has said \u201cregime change\u201d in Iran may be the best thing that can happen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">US envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are taking part in the negotiations, which are being mediated by Oman, a source briefed on the matter told Reuters, alongside Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araqchi.
