{"id":475404,"date":"2026-02-18T07:29:11","date_gmt":"2026-02-18T07:29:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/475404\/"},"modified":"2026-02-18T07:29:11","modified_gmt":"2026-02-18T07:29:11","slug":"local-gop-senator-credits-ivermectin-for-treating-his-cancer-wants-it-available-over-the-counter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/475404\/","title":{"rendered":"Local GOP senator credits ivermectin for treating his cancer, wants it available over-the-counter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"1\">That protocol, according to the bill, would include a standardized fact-sheet handed to the customer describing ivermectin\u2019s appropriate use methods and any other information required by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pharmacy.ohio.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ohio Board of Pharmacy<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"2\">S.B. 249 would require participating pharmacies to either dispense ivermectin \u201cas soon as practical\u201d or to refer the customer to a different pharmacy that can fill the order. The bill sets a minimum age limit of 18 years old. The rest of the stipulations would be set by the pharmacy board.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"3\">Lang told the Dayton Daily News he hopes his bill makes ivermectin an over-the-counter option in Ohio.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/57SHIHDPOBDVDLEYXA54CROXSE.JPG\" alt=\"Sen. NICK GRAHAM\/STAFF\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" width=\"1600\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-credit-text\">Credit: Nick Graham<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.daytondailynews.com\/local\/local-gop-senator-credits-ivermectin-for-treating-his-cancer-wants-it-available-over-the-counter\/JRA7JVWPQFHVNIO3UXRBINSFSQ\/[object Object]\" class=\"image-expand\" alt=\"icon to expand image\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-credit-text\">Credit: Nick Graham<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"6\">\u201cThe effect, to keep it simple, would be (that) anybody that wanted to purchase ivermectin &#8230; would be able to go their local pharmacy and buy ivermectin, just like they can go buy Tylenol and\/or Imodium today,\u201d Lang said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"8\">The drug, used traditionally to treat or prevent parasites in animals, has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/consumers\/consumer-updates\/ivermectin-and-covid-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">for limited use in humans<\/a>, including tablets to treat parasitic worms and topical creams to treat head lice or rosacea. The drug became a household name during the coronavirus pandemic after claims of its efficacy for treating COVID-19 circulated, which the FDA has not signed off on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"9\">Some doctors, like Lang\u2019s oncologist, have been prescribing it for cancer. Lang, <a href=\"https:\/\/ohiochannel.org\/series\/ohio-senate-health-committee?pageSize=12&amp;sort=releaseDate&amp;direction=desc&amp;start=1&amp;releaseDateStart=2025-01-01+00%3A00%3A00&amp;releaseDateEnd=2026-12-31+00%3A00%3A00\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">testifying before the Senate Health Committee last week<\/a>, said ivermectin and another anti-parasitic drug are the two primary medications he\u2019s taken throughout his cancer treatment, describing it as a non-traditional, \u201cmetabolic\u201d approach to treating his disease. <\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"10\">Two months into taking ivermectin supplied by a Canadian pharmacy, Lang said, he was told that he\u2019d need to get the drug locally, as the out-of-country pharmacy ran out. His local doctor called in the prescription to a major chain near him, which informed him that they could not fill his prescription because they \u201cdo not recognize (ivermectin) as a protocol for cancer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"11\">The pharmacy ended up filling his prescription once, Lang said. He then found another major chain near him that would fill his prescription, but that pharmacy eventually stopped filling the prescription, telling Lang that the pharmacy\u2019s corporate offices would no longer allow it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"12\">\u201cImagine how frustrating that would be,\u201d Lang said. \u201cI don\u2019t think any pharmacy should get in between what (a doctor) and their patients believe to be the best protocol or the best plan for them to follow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"15\">Lang is joined on the bill by Sen. Terry Johnson, R-McDermott, a retired doctor who vice chairs the Senate Health Committee. He testified last week touting ivermectin as a potential, under-utilized tool that could help against cancer and other diseases that pose serious problems for America.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"16\">\u201cDoctors have always reached out for what seems to work if it\u2019s not going to hurt someone,\u201d Johnson said, voicing frustration with the scrutiny aimed at ivermectin during the pandemic. <\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"17\">\u201cWe see the same thing with cancer,\u201d Johnson said. \u201cOn the other hand, there are a lot of oncologists that are looking at this with an open mind and realizing, \u2018Hey, if it works, why not?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"18\">Another doctor on the committee, Sen. Beth Liston, D-Dublin, said that there has not been extensive human-use studies on the ivermectin and raised concerns about a person\u2019s ability to give informed consent regarding a drug that isn\u2019t fully vetted by professionals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"19\">Liston also asked whether the sponsors had spoken to pharmacists about the bill, to which they said no. Johnson did add that S.B. 249 contains immunity clauses that would protect pharmacists and prescribers from civil damages, criminal prosecution, or disciplinary action for ivermectin-related damages, so long as they were acting in good faith.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"21\">In an interview with the Dayton Daily News, Ohio Pharmacist Association CEO Sara Kilpatrick told this outlet that her group has not yet taken a position on the bill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"22\">\u201cWhat we\u2019d like to get across is that pharmacists are medication experts, and our priority in any medication access model is ensuring that drugs are used safely and appropriately,\u201d she said. \u201cWe certainly look forward to having more conversations with members of the general assembly if they intend to advance the bill.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"26\">For more stories like this, <a href=\"https:\/\/myaccount.daytondailynews.com\/dn\/preference\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">sign up for our Ohio Politics newsletter<\/a>.
