The highly-contagious (and serious) illness is notoriously unpleasant, so figuring out how to treat a stomach bug fast can go a long way in speeding up your recovery.

Norovirus symptoms are no joke, says William Schaffner, M.D., an infectious disease specialist and professor at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. “Many people report having diarrhea on the toilet and leaning over to vomit in the sink simultaneously.” It doesn’t take much to catch it, either. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it takes fewer than 100 norovirus particles to make someone sick, and people with the virus can shed billions of viral particles alone in their vomit and feces.

Meet the experts: Thomas Russo, M.D., professor and chief of infectious disease at the University at Buffalo in New York, William Schaffner, M.D., an infectious disease specialist and professor at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine; <a href="https://centerforhealthsecurity.org/who-we-are/our-people/amesh-adalja-md-fidsa" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" data-ylk="slk:Amesh A. If you do get infected and are suffering from a painful stomach ache or other symptoms, there are several things you can do at home to ride out the virus more comfortably. Here’s what doctors want you to know about how to treat a stomach bug.

How to treat a stomach bug quickly

There is no specific medication to treat stomach bugs or norovirus, nor are there vaccines to prevent them. However, doctors say there are a few things you can do at home to stay as comfortable as possible (and hopefully therefore speed up your recovery!) while dealing with the illness.

Take small sips of liquids

Dehydration is a big concern with norovirus, making it important to try to stay hydrated as much as possible, Dr. Schaffner says. “Take small sips of fluids,” he says. “You don’t want to put too much in your stomach at once because it may come up right away.”

Replenish electrolytes

Drinks that contain electrolytes, like sports drinks, may be a good option if you have them, says Thomas Russo, M.D., professor and chief of infectious disease at the University at Buffalo in New York. “You can even try watered-down juices to give you glucose,” he says. (When you’re dealing with vomiting and diarrhea, your glucose—a.k.a. blood sugar—levels may dip, Dr. Russo explains. Having glucose in this situation may help increase your energy levels.)

Take acetaminophen

If you feel like you can keep it down, acetaminophen (a.k.a. Tylenol) may help combat a fever and any aches and pains you may have, Dr. Russo says. However, he suggests avoiding nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen. “Some people can get gastric irritation with them,” Dr. Russo says. “You’ve already got something irritating your stomach, and you don’t want to pile on.”

Try to eat something bland

If your stomach won’t tolerate it, Dr. Schaffner stresses that you’ll be OK just having liquids for a day or two (barring any medications that may require you to eat). But if you feel like you can get something down, focus on “eating something bland,” says Amesh A. Adalja, M.D., a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security. That includes focusing on the BRAT diet (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast) until your nausea and vomiting have stopped.

How do I avoid getting norovirus?

Norovirus is extremely contagious and is most commonly spread through direct contact with someone who is infected, eating contaminated food or drinking contaminated liquids, or touching contaminated objects and surfaces, according to the CDC. Unfortunately, there’s no way to guarantee you won’t catch the stomach bug, but the CDC does recommend taking the following easy steps to reduce your risk:

Wash your hands often and well

Thoroughly cook shellfish and wash produce

Clean and disinfect contaminated surfaces when possible

Wash laundry in hot water

If you are sick, stay home for 48 hours after symptoms stop

When to see a doctor

The good news, if there is any with norovirus: People tend to feel better within one to three days.

But if you have vomiting and diarrhea that won’t stop, severe weakness, or you’re an older adult, Dr. Adalja recommends seeking medical attention. Doctors will likely want to give you IV fluids and an antiemetic medication, which can help to stop the vomiting.

If you’re uncomfortable but feel like you can handle this illness at home on your own (and you don’t have signs of severe dehydration), Dr. Russo recommends just focusing on your fluid intake. “The main concern is dehydration,” he says.

Again, norovirus is incredibly contagious. “Have family members keep their distance from you,” Dr. Schaffner says. “When you vomit, you can create an aerosol of the virus that can infect someone else, even if they’re being very careful with you. It’s best to separate yourself.”

You Might Also Like

Doctors Share Tips for Treating a Stomach Bug Ekaterina Goncharova – Getty Images Cases of the uber-contagious stomach…

[59
210212,97,252,253,10649,173008,210213,177314,175750,221038,173005,68295,10034,86867
0":"post-478160","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-health-care","8":"tag-amesh-a-adalja","9":"tag-health","10":"tag-health-care","11":"tag-healthcare","12":"tag-infectious-disease","13":"tag-infectious-disease-specialist","14":"tag-johns-hopkins-center-for-health-security","15":"tag-norovirus-symptoms","16":"tag-stomach-bug","17":"tag-stomach-bugs","18":"tag-thomas-russo","19":"tag-university-at-buffalo","20":"tag-vanderbilt-university","21":"tag-william-schaffner
["GET
