The point here, though, besides wondering whether golf\u2019s top-ranked player<\/a> could have also been a quarterback of his hometown Dallas Cowboys?<\/p>\n What\u2019s the point?\u00a0<\/p>\n If playing golf drives us to such frustration, why play golf? Clearly, there are other pursuits. A throw-a-ball-in-the-trees payoff sounds unpleasant. Scheffler said Wednesday that he doesn\u2019t even have a proper method for measuring how good he is.\u00a0<\/p>\n Then again, maybe not being boxed in is freeing. Perhaps immeasurability is undeniably good.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n At the least, Scheffler\u2019s press conference ahead of this week\u2019s Genesis Invitational<\/a> wasn\u2019t mundane. And if you\u2019re the learning type like he is \u2014 \u201cmy mind has always been my greatest tool,\u201d he said \u2014\u00a0that\u2019s as welcome as a sunny day for a weekend tee time.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cI think that\u2019s why we keep practicing,\u201d Scheffler said. \u201cYou never get to a place where you feel like you\u2019ve got it figured out. I always like practicing and trying to improve and creating new shots.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cI think golf is kind of the endless pursuit of trying to figure something out and I\u2019m never going to get there, but there\u2019s no harm in trying.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n Scheffler brought up rounds with Jordan Spieth<\/a>, a fellow pro and longtime friend who he plays with often.\u00a0<\/p>\n More learning.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cYou talk about golf being this kind of endless pursuit of trying to figure this game out,\u201d Scheffler said.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cI play golf with Jordan a lot at home. Like let\u2019s say I\u2019m tied for the lead going into the final round and I shoot 62 and the guy shoots 61. Yeah, I can definitely look at a few shots I\u2019d want to have back, but at the end of the day, the tournament is over and you take your hat off, shake hands, say congratulations.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cThe great thing about golf is oftentimes we just get to show up the next week and start all over and compete again.\u201d<\/p>\n Over time, you even create friendships.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cLike you look at a guy like Collin [Morikawa]<\/a> last week,\u201d Scheffler said. \u201cI\u2019ve been competing against Collin since we were like 14 years old. He wins a tournament, he announces he\u2019s pregnant<\/a>, and all of a sudden you just have this \u2014 it\u2019s such a cool moment to see a guy who\u2019s played really good golf over the last few years and hasn\u2019t quite gotten the results and the wins, but he\u2019s played pretty consistent golf, and then he gets to announce that he\u2019s having a kid. It\u2019s this moment, it\u2019s like, wow. I competed as hard as I could, got beat, and it\u2019s like, man, that\u2019s awesome. You won, congrats.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cYou\u2019re having a baby, even bigger congrats. Then we\u2019re here this week and the prep just starts again.\u201d<\/p>\n So yeah, same thing goes for throw-a-ball-in-the-trees moments.\u00a0<\/p>\n On to the next hole. On to the next tournament.
