After five consecutive games (three men\u2019s quarterfinals Wednesday and both women\u2019s medal-round games Thursday) went to overtime, Canada defeated Finland on a goal in the final minute of regulation. The second semifinal was a relative letdown on the excitement scale, as the United States cruised past Slovakia.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. added to its gold medal total (check out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/interactive\/2026-winter-olympics-medal-results\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the medal count here<\/a>), as freestyle halfpipe skier Alex Ferreira, who had a silver and bronze in his first two Olympic appearances, took the lead on his final run to snatch the gold.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some of the highlights from Friday\u2019s Olympic action:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-7061372 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/GettyImages-2262137946-scaled-e1771632078145.jpg\" alt=\"The puck that resulted in the winning score travels toward Finland goalie Juuse Saros, in a white jersey.\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1600\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>\n      The puck shot by Nathan MacKinnon for the go-ahead goal heads toward Finland goaltender Juuse Saros. (Alexander Nemenov \/ AAFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>U.S., Canada to play for gold in men\u2019s hockey<\/p>\n<p>The rematch that has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6139289\/2025\/02\/15\/canada-usa-4-nations-face-off-fight-tkachuk\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">eagerly anticipated<\/a> since their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6150529\/2025\/02\/20\/connor-mcdavid-4-nations-canada-usa\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">4 Nations meetings<\/a> last year is set. The United States and Canada will play Sunday for the gold medal.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7060232\/2026\/02\/20\/canada-finland-olympics-mens-hockey-semifinal\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Canada defeated Finland 3-2<\/a> in the first of Friday\u2019s semifinals, rallying from a 2-0 deficit as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7060856\/2026\/02\/20\/finland-canada-olympics-mens-hockey-semifinal\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Finland seemed to play not to lose<\/a> instead of playing to win. Canadian captain Sidney Crosby, who left Wednesday\u2019s semifinal, did not play.<\/p>\n<p>Sam Reinhart and Shea Theodore scored Canada\u2019s first two goals, and Nathan MacKinnon lasered in a power-play tally with 36 seconds left in regulation for the winner.<\/p>\n<p>The United States had a far easier time in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7060963\/2026\/02\/20\/usa-slovakia-result-olympic-gold-medal-canada\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">its 6-2 victory over Slovakia<\/a>. Dylan Larkin put the United States up 1-0 just 4:19 into the game, and Jack Hughes scored twice in the second period as the U.S. built a 5-0 lead.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. men haven\u2019t won an Olympic gold medal in hockey since the 1980 \u201cMiracle on Ice\u201d team. (Millo Moravski \/ Agence Zoom \/ Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>Ferreira completes Olympic set with gold<\/p>\n<p>U.S. freestyle skier Alex Ferreira earned his third medal in his third Olympic appearance, winning the men\u2019s freestyle skiing halfpipe with a strong third run. Ferreira earned a silver medal in the 2018 halfpipe and bronze in the 2022 event.<\/p>\n<p>Ferreira was second to Estonia\u2019s Henry Sildaru after the second of three runs, with a best of 90.50 to Sildaru\u2019s 92.75. After Ferreira improved to 93.75 on his final run, Sildaru followed and also improved \u2014 but not enough, finishing 0.75 points behind.<\/p>\n<p>Brendan Mackay of Canada took the bronze, 2 points behind Sildaru. Goepper\u2019s fianc\u00e9e, Corinn Childs, said via text message to The Athletic: \u201cHe\u2019s good. He\u2019ll be sore but he\u2019s a trooper (sic).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melville Ives, 19, was taken out of the halfpipe on a sled.<\/p>\n<p>U.S., Canada to vie for curling bronze<\/p>\n<p>The United States and Canada will meet on ice in another medal-round game after each lost in the women\u2019s curling semifinals. They face off Saturday at 8:05 a.m. ET for the bronze.<\/p>\n<p>The United States has not medaled in women\u2019s curling in any of the previous seven Olympics that featured the event.<\/p>\n<p>Switzerland (a 7-4 winner over the U.S. on Friday) and Sweden (6-3 over Canada) will play for the gold Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Dutch women continue reign in 1,500m speedskating<\/p>\n<p>Antoinette Rijpma-de Jong of the Netherlands won the women\u2019s 1,500 meters, becoming the fifth consecutive Dutch skater to win the event. U.S. skater Brittany Bowe, who turns 38 next week, finished fourth in her final Olympics, 0.61 seconds behind the winner. Bowe competed in four Olympics and earned two bronze medals.<\/p>\n<p>Other notes and highlights<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Alpine skier Lindsey Vonn posted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7060473\/2026\/02\/20\/olympics-lindsey-vonn-injury-update-surgery\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">images of her surgically repaired knee<\/a>. She said her surgery lasted more than six hours. \u2026 In the men\u2019s 15-kilometer mass start biathlon, Norway\u2019s Johannes Dale-Skjevdal and Sturla Holm L\u00e6greid (he of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7036668\/2026\/02\/10\/norwegian-olympian-cheating-girlfriend-medal\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the cheating confession<\/a> heard \u2019round the world) took gold and silver, respectively. Quentin Fillon Maillet, who already won three biathlon golds for France at the Milan Cortina Games, earned bronze. It was his ninth medal in the last two Olympics.
