Hlavaj had allowed four on 23 shots, and the bench made the hard call.

That’s when the temperature spiked. Hlavaj looked furious, slammed his way off, and had words for head coach Vladimir Orszagh as he reached the bench.

He even punched the boards.

Goalie pulls are never personal, but they feel personal. In a one-and-done semifinal, there’s nowhere to hide from it.

The irony is Hlavaj earned this stage. The 24-year-old is an undrafted goalie under contract with the Minnesota Wild system, and he already stole headlines earlier in the tournament.

Then the arena did the thing it keeps doing. Team USA’s goal song, “Free Bird,” hit again, for the fourth time, and the building leaned red, white, and loud.

Stanislav Skorvanek took over in relief, the veteran who plays in the Czech Extraliga with Mountfield HK.

Samuel Hlavaj and the Slovakia bench hit boiling point

If you’re a Slovakia fan, you can feel the mix of pride and rage, because the ride’s been real, and the room still has a bronze medal game to win on Saturday.

Skorvanek didn’t even get a breath. Just 19 seconds later, Jack Eichel snapped a backhand home, and the scoreboard turned the knife.

Eichel’s touch is pure confidence, the kind that shows up when your top-six is rolling and your forecheck keeps forcing rushed clears.

For Slovakia, the pull was about tomorrow as much as tonight. Keeping Hlavaj from spiraling further mattered if there’s still a medal to grab.

The brutal part is Hlavaj knew it, too. That’s why the glare at the bench said more than any shout could.

Now the question is reset, not blame. Can Slovakia bottle the anger, tighten the slot, and play a complete sixty with something tangible on the line?

Previously on Chicago Hockey Insider

POLL

13 HOURS AGO|61 ANSWERS

Slovakian goaltender loses his cool and lashes out on head coach after Team USA plays Free Bird once again

Should Slovakia start Samuel Hlavaj in the bronze medal game?

PUBLICATION Sam Walker February 20, 2026 (4:40 PM) Photo credit: h Samuel Hlavaj melts down after…

[66
222113,70862,385,222110,222112,99,222111,42270
post-481813","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-nhl","tag-free-bird","tag-jack-eichel","tag-nhl","tag-samuel-hlavaj","tag-slovakia-hockey","tag-sports","tag-stanislav-skorvanek","tag-team-usa
["GET
