Estimates suggest that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/dementia\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:57 million people;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">57 million people<\/a> have dementia worldwide, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/159442\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Alzheimer\u2019s disease;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Alzheimer\u2019s disease<\/a> contributing to 60 to 70% of cases.<\/p>\n<p>Dementia typically occurs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alz.org\/alzheimers-dementia\/what-is-dementia\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:due to;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">due to<\/a> damage to or changes in the brain. Lead is a naturally occurring toxic metal\u00a0that can negatively affect health.<\/p>\n<p>Lead exposure occurs primarily\u00a0through ingesting or inhaling lead-contamined dust, soil, paint, or water. Over time, exposure to high levels of lead can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/lead-poisoning-and-health\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:severely damage;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">severely damage<\/a> the brain.<\/p>\n<p>A recent study, published in <a href=\"https:\/\/alz-journals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/alz.71075\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Alzheimer\u2019s &amp; Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer\u2019s Association;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Alzheimer\u2019s &amp; Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer\u2019s Association<\/a>, suggests that long-term exposure to lead may substantially increase the risk of Alzheimer\u2019s disease, and other forms of dementia, in older adults.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, another study, published in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.neurology.org\/doi\/10.1212\/WNL.0000000000214616\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Neurology;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Neurology<\/a>, suggests that exposure to lead before birth may be associated with poorer thinking and memory skills decades later, particularly among females.<\/p>\n<p>Michigan study overview and key findings<\/p>\n<p>The study, led by researchers at the University of Michigan School of Public Health, highlights how historic environmental exposures, particularly from leaded gasoline, paint, and pipes before <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6522252\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:regulations;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">regulations<\/a> dramatically reduced their use, may continue to affect cognitive health in people born before the 1980s.<\/p>\n<p>The research team analyzed data from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/nhanes\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES);elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES)<\/a> linked with Medicare claims and mortality records, following participants for up to 30 years.<\/p>\n<p>Using machine learning models, the researchers estimated participants\u2019 bone lead levels, which act as a biomarker of cumulative lifetime exposure.<\/p>\n<p>The body stores lead in the teeth and bones, where it can accumulate over time. Thus, these reflect a better measure of cumulative exposure, as blood lead levels only reflect recent exposure and clears relatively quickly.<\/p>\n<p>The study found that higher bone lead levels were strongly associated with increased dementia risk. Individuals in the highest quarterile of bone lead levels had nearly three times the risk of Alzheimer\u2019s disease compared with those with the lowest level.<\/p>\n<p>For all-cause dementia, the risk more than doubled among those with highest cumulative lead exposure.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sph.umich.edu\/faculty-profiles\/bakulski-kelly.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Kelly Bakulski;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Kelly Bakulski<\/a>, PhD, associate professor of Epidemiology at Michigan Public Health and one of the study\u2019s senior authors was surprised by the magnitude of the increased risk:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cYes, the findings were quite striking. This represents a great opportunity to help a lot of people by lowering lead exposure levels across the population.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, the researchers found no significant link between current blood lead levels and dementia risk, underscoring the importance of long-term exposure measurements.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, <a href=\"https:\/\/recognitionhealth.com\/team-member\/dr-steven-allder\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Steve Allder;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Steve Allder<\/a>, BMBS, FRCP, DM, consultant neurologist at Cognition Health, was also surprised at the findings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHistorically, many studies on lead and cognitive decline relied on blood lead levels, which reflect recent exposure and typically show weaker associations. In contrast, bone lead represents decades\u2011long storage, and this study\u2019s use of bone lead estimates likely captures the true long\u2011term burden much more effectively,\u201d Allder told us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe finding that individuals in the highest quartile of cumulative lead exposure had\u00a0nearly three times the risk\u00a0of Alzheimer\u2019s disease and more than double the risk of all\u2011cause dementia is notable and striking from a public health perspective,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Other research links to lower cognitive performance<\/p>\n<p>Another recent study suggests that exposure to lead before birth may be associated with poorer thinking and memory skills decades later, particularly among females.<\/p>\n<p>To assess prenatal exposure, researchers analyzed baby teeth that had been donated decades earlier. Between roughly 1958 and 1970, parents in the St. Louis, Missouri, area donated their children\u2019s baby teeth as part of a <a href=\"https:\/\/hsph.harvard.edu\/research\/weisskopf-lab\/research-projects\/st-louis-baby-tooth-later-life-health-study-overview\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:radiation study;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">radiation study<\/a>. The research team tracked down the donors roughly 6 decades later.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 715 people, now with an average age of 62, completed cognitive tests on their home computers and had their stored baby teeth analyzed.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers found that higher levels of lead exposure during the second trimester of pregnancy were associated with lower cognitive test scores.<\/p>\n<p>In particular, for female participants, every small increase in lead levels in their teeth during the second trimester of pregnancy was linked to lower cognitive test scores.<\/p>\n<p>Although the study does not prove that prenatal lead exposure causes cognitive decline, but identifies a significant long-term association.<\/p>\n<p>Why this matters<\/p>\n<p>While <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/lead\/final-strategy-reduce-lead-exposures-and-disparities-us-communities\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:public health initiatives;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">public health initiatives<\/a> are working to reduce lead exposure, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/land-research\/epa-lead-pb-research-land-and-legacy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:legacy sources;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">legacy sources<\/a> such as contaminated soil, aging infrastructure, and older housing with lead-based paint continue to pose risks, particularly in underserved communities.<\/p>\n<p>Recent events such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/hsph.harvard.edu\/news\/the-children-of-flint-ten-years-later\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Flint water crisis;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Flint water crisis<\/a> and reports of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/lead-prevention\/news\/outbreak-applesauce-pouches.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:lead contamination;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">lead contamination<\/a> in cinnamon applesauce marketed to young children underscore that exposure risks persist.<\/p>\n<p>Due to lead\u2019s persistence in the body, exposures from early life may contribute to neurodegenerative changes many years later.<\/p>\n<p>Bakulski told Medical News Today how long-term lead exposure may contribute to neurodegeneration: \u201cLead has no normal physiologic function in the body, but it can hijack existing pathways. For example, it can enter cells by riding along the divalent metal transporter that normally transports iron.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce in cells, it can <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7454042\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:cause general neurotoxicity;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">cause general neurotoxicity<\/a> by promoting oxidative stress, mitochondrial damage, and ER stress. In animal models with genetic susceptibility to produce amyloid and tau, lead exposure accelerates these processes,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to MNT, Allder also highlighted how lead exposure can damage blood vessels and the blood\u2013brain barrier, as well as alter epigenetic patterns that could predispose the brain to neurodegenerative changes decades later.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese mechanisms overlap with known dementia pathways \u2014 oxidative stress, amyloid\/tau aggregation, vascular dysfunction, and epigenetic vulnerability \u2014 providing biological plausibility for the epidemiological findings linking long\u2011term lead burden to dementia,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly a fifth of dementia cases may be linked to lead<\/p>\n<p>Findings from the University of Michigan study suggest that potentially around 18% of new cases each year in the US may be linked to cumulative lead exposure.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sph.umich.edu\/faculty-profiles\/park-sungkyun.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Sung Kyun Park;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Sung Kyun Park<\/a>, ScD, MPH, professor of Epidemiology and Environmental Health Sciences and one of the study\u2019s senior authors told MNT:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile lead\u2019s neurotoxicity is well-established, prior studies lacked data quantifying its impact on Alzheimer\u2019s disease and dementia risk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsing a nationally representative sample, we estimated the population attributable fraction and found that, for patella lead (a bone lead marker), up to 18% of new dementia cases in the U.S. each year could be linked to cumulative lead exposure, a striking figure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This could help explain part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC12261920\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:rising dementia burden;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">rising dementia burden<\/a> in older populations today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIn the US, if we were able to drop everyone\u2019s bone lead levels to the 25th percentile, we may be able to prevent up to 18% of future dementia cases.\u201d\u00a0<br \/>\u2013 Kelly Bakulski, PhD<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, findings from the other study add to growing evidence that early-life environmental exposures <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0149763425004452\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:may influence;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">may influence<\/a> brain health decades later.<\/p>\n<p>How to reduce lead exposure<\/p>\n<p>These studies reinforce the need for continued efforts to eliminate remaining sources of lead exposure, particularly in environments where older housing and infrastructure still expose people to this neurotoxin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRather than focusing on individual interventions, efforts should prioritize eliminating remaining sources of lead, such as old paint and pipes in aging infrastructure, especially in environmentally disadvantaged communities,\u201d Park explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause lead exposure is unequally distributed, targeted policy action and resource allocation are needed to address these disparities,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOverall, reducing environmental toxins and addressing legacy exposures through infrastructure investment and public health initiatives could potentially mitigate a portion of future dementia burden,\u201d Allder told MNT.<\/p>\n<p>Bakulski emphasized that there is strong evidence to suggest that air pollution causes dementia and Alzheimer\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolicies to reduce air pollution, including from motor vehicles and industrial sources, save lives and prevent dementia,\u201d\u00a0she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith this new study, we are part of a growing body of research that is starting to show that lead exposure likely also contributes to dementia and Alzheimer\u2019s disease. Investment in infrastructure to reduce lead exposure will benefit public health in multiple dimensions, including the brain,\u201d\u00a0the researcher added.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/lead-prevention\/communication-resources\/prevent-lead-poisoning-in-children.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC);elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)<\/a> provide the following tips to help reduce lead exposure:<\/p>\n<p>If living in a home built before 1978, have it checked by a licensed lead inspector. If rennovating an older home, use only approved methods for removing lead hazards.<\/p>\n<p>Contact the water provider to check if there is a lead service line connected to the home. Using filters or bottled water <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/lead-prevention\/prevention\/drinking-water.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:can help;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">can help<\/a> to reduce exposure.<\/p>\n<p>Try to avoid products, such as antique toys or toy jewelry, which may contain lead.<\/p>\n<p>Regularly wash hands and faces.<\/p>\n<p>Remove shoes when entering the house and change into clean clothes before coming home if a person works with lead.<\/p>\n<p>Bakulski highlighted the protective role of calcium and maintaining good bone health to help reduce risk following potential exposure, noting that:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWhen we are exposed to lead, it travels around our bodies in the bloodstream. Lead has a similar size and charge as calcium, and just like how our bodies take calcium out of the blood and plug it into our bones, lead can be stored in our bones.
