LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – Uncertainty over federal tariffs and their impact on Michigan\u2019s economy continues, as small businesses navigate rapid policy changes.<\/p>\n
The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday struck down many of President Donald Trump\u2019s global tariffs. The president responded Friday afternoon by announcing plans for a new 10% global tariff<\/a>.<\/p>\n Chris Luoma, owner of Jerry\u2019s Automotive in Lansing, said he\u2019s committed to his customers and offering fair prices, but he\u2019s been fighting uncertainty to make it happen, in the midst of sweeping federal tariffs on foreign goods.<\/p>\n \u201cOver the last year or so, we\u2019ve really had to watch the prices of parts that we\u2019re getting in,\u201d Luoma said. \u201cYou want to still offer good quality to your clients, but you\u2019ve got to be fair and competitive at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n When he can, Luoma said he buys American-made parts for his local shop, but what he does buy from overseas has seen a spike in price since the tariffs were put in place.<\/p>\n Small business owners like Luoma are now hoping for stability after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled a portion of President Donald Trump\u2019s tariffs are not legally sound.<\/p>\n READ MORE:<\/p>\n Michigan leaders react to Supreme Court\u2019s decision on tariffs, Trump\u2019s response<\/a>Trump says he\u2019ll sign executive order to enact 10% global tariff after Supreme Court defeat<\/a><\/p>\n Michigan State University supply chain expert Jason Miller said the legal landscape remains complicated.<\/p>\n \u201cWhere the complexity comes in, is there are a lot of other powers the president can use to essentially reassemble these tariffs,\u201d he told News 10.<\/p>\n Miller said he expects the president to take advantage of those options. The president has already declared an additional 10% global tariff in response to the Supreme Court\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n Miller said the ruling is a positive step for consumers but noted some manufacturers will be negatively affected.<\/p>\n \u201cOn net, the benefits will outweigh the cost, but I do want to be clear, there are some manufacturers in the state of Michigan who were benefiting from this, and now no longer are going to receive those benefits,\u201d Miller said.<\/p>\n In the meantime, Luoma said he is focused on staying ahead of any incoming changes.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd try to do our best to pay attention to what\u2019s going on with parts availability, parts pricing, try to find a middle ground, offer a good premium part and a good repair to our clients without sacrificing quality,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n For the businesses that paid billions of dollars in tariff costs, President Trump said they will not receive a refund.<\/p>\n Although, Miller said he expects those businesses will attempt to recoup their losses regardless.<\/p>\n Stream News 10 on your favorite devices!
