Graham Sheffield, the former artistic director of the Barbican, has also signed the letter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">In a recent statement,\u00a0Saltzman said that the move is \u201cdue to an organisational restructure\u201d and that her role will not be replaced.\u00a0Saltzman, who was appointed in 2024, was reportedly made redundant and is <a class=\"transition-all duration-default shadow-internalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theartnewspaper.com\/2026\/02\/17\/barbican-arts-head-devyani-saltzman-leaves-role-after-18-months\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">due to leave in May<\/a>. In January a new chief executive, Abigail Pogson, started at the central London arts venue, which draws around 1.5 million people annually. <\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">The letter says: \u201cThe Barbican has stated that it will not comment on \u2018individual staffing matters\u2019. However, this is not an ordinary HR [human resources] issue. This is a major public cultural institution, funded and held in trust for the people of this city and country.\u201d The Barbican initially told The Art Newspaper that it was \u201cunable to comment on individual staffing matters\u201d, before later releasing a <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.barbican.org.uk\/our-story\/press-room\/director-for-arts-update\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">statement<\/a> in which it said that Devyani was departing \u201cfollowing a phase of artistic and organisational transition\u201d and that her role would not be replaced as the venue prepares to close ahead of a <a class=\"transition-all duration-default shadow-internalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theartnewspaper.com\/2025\/12\/15\/londons-brutalist-barbican-centre-to-close-for-\u00a3240m-renovation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">major renovation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">\u201cA decision affecting its most senior artistic role, and one of the very few leaders of South Asian and racially diverse heritage in its history, has sector\u2011wide and community\u2011wide implications,\u201d the letter says. \u201cTo characterise such a decision as an internal matter only is inadequate and dismissive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">The letter calls on the Barbican to implement certain measures including providing\u00a0\u201ca full, public explanation of the rationale and process that led to the curtailment of Devyani Saltzman\u2019s role, including the status of the post she held\u201d. The signatories also want Barbican management to\u00a0\u201cpublish up\u2011to\u2011date data on the diversity of the Barbican\u2019s senior leadership and governance\u00a0and set out how this decision affects progress towards your own stated equality and anti\u2011racism goals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">In 2021, Nicholas Kenyon resigned as managing director after 14 years after staff <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/culture\/2021\/jun\/23\/barbican-boss-to-step-down-after-institutional-racism-row\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">told the\u00a0Guardian<\/a> that the Barbican was \u201cinstitutionally racist\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">The Barbican\u2019s \u201c<a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.barbican.org.uk\/our-story\/how-were-changing\/anti-racism-action-plan#:~:text=Our%20initial%20priorities%20for%20the,enhance%20career%20development%20and%20progression\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">anti-racism action plan<\/a>\u201d was finalised in 2024. \u201cInitial priorities for the plan include starting [a] procurement process to implement anti-racism training for staff; establishing a zero tolerance reporting system to report and track incidents of racism, and [formalising] a Global Majority sponsorship programme,\u201d says an online statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">The letter to the Barbican, which was made public earlier this week, ends:\u00a0\u201cWe urge you to respond to this letter with honesty, transparency and a concrete plan of action.
