During the last few years of Gisele B\u00fcndchen<\/a> and Tom Brady\u2019s<\/a> marriage, there was a lot of chatter about how Tom was splitting his time between football and family.<\/p>\n

In a 2018 docuseries<\/a> about Tom\u2019s career, Gisele expressed disappointment that her then-husband opted to continue playing football beyond 2016 after previously saying he\u2019d retire. For context, Tom and Gisele share two children, Vivian and Benjamin, who are now aged 12 and 15. He also has a 17-year-old son, Jack, from a previous relationship.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I met him in 2006, he said, \u2018Listen, I\u2019m just gonna play for 10 more years, I\u2019m gonna win one Super Bowl, and I\u2019m gonna be happy,\u2019\u201d Gisele recalled. \u201cI told him last year [in 2016], \u2018I think this is great, what a great win. Now you\u2019ve won two Super Bowls, it\u2019s the end of the tenth year.\u2019 And I was like, \u2018Woohoo, let\u2019s go! I\u2019m ready!\u2019 But then he\u2019s like, \u2018No.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFootball, as far as I\u2019m concerned, is his first love. I think it\u2019s his main love, really quite frankly,\u201d she added, saying in a subsequent confessional: \u201cIt\u2019s about priorities. What are the priorities?\u201d<\/p>\n

At long last, the quarterback announced his retirement<\/a> in February 2022, and Gisele was among those to publicly celebrate the milestone. Then, just 40 days later, he backtracked and revealed that he wasn\u2019t ready to give up football after all.<\/p>\n

Reports at the time claimed that Gisele \u201cwasn’t thrilled<\/a>\u201d by Tom\u2019s un-retirement, and in May 2022, the supermodel seemed to suggest as much during an interview with\u00a0British Vogue<\/a>, in which she said: \u201cI don\u2019t think relationships just happen; it\u2019s never the fairy tale people want to believe it is. His focus is on his career, mine is mostly on the kids.\u201d<\/p>\n

So, when Tom and Gisele divorced in October 2022<\/a> \u2014 just a few weeks after his 23rd NFL season<\/a> kicked off \u2014 it was widely speculated that his unrelenting focus on football was the catalyst for the split<\/a>.<\/p>\n

For what it\u2019s worth, Gisele later denied this was the case, telling Vanity Fair<\/a> in March 2023: \u201cI have always cheered for him, and I would continue forever. If there\u2019s one person I want to be the happiest in the world, it\u2019s him, believe me. I want him to achieve and to conquer. I want all his dreams to come true.\u201d<\/p>\n

As we now know, Tom\u2019s 23rd season wound up being his last, as he officially retired (again) in February 2023<\/a>. If you follow Tom on Instagram, you\u2019ll see he spends a lot of his time with his three kids. Although, he\u2019s also talked openly about his past failings as a dad<\/a>, saying at an event in 2024: \u201cI’ve screwed up a lot as a parent.\u201d<\/p>\n

After saying that being\u00a0“a parent is probably the hardest job all of us have,” Tom talked about wanting to be “dependable and consistent” for his children.<\/p>\n

Now, the 47-year-old has opened up about parenting again \u2014 this time, seemingly defending his decision to prioritize football while his kids were young. In the July 29 edition of his<\/a> 199<\/a> newsletter<\/a>, Tom pondered the balance between \u201cpersonal satisfaction and professional achievement,\u201d writing: \u201cI think part of being a great father is being a great example of doing what it takes to take care of your family. I chose to do it by playing football.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy dedication to the sport, the hours of practice, the moments when I was laser focused\u2014those were times when I believe I was doing the best possible thing for my family and my kids,\u201d he wrote. \u201cBy prioritizing my profession and teaching, by example, what it takes to be really good at your job, what it takes to follow through on commitments, what it takes to be a great teammate; and showing them, also by example, that work is a big part of all of our lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reminding readers that your children \u201csee what you do in every aspect of your life and how you do it,\u201d Tom highlighted that \u201creading bedtime stories and helping them with homework are not the only ways to be a great parent.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd neither is winning Super Bowls or MVP,\u201d he added. \u201cBeing a great football player didn\u2019t make me a great dad, but how I became a great player certainly had an impact\u2014from showing up day in and day out, to doing whatever it took to get better, be successful, be a role model, and to provide.\u201d<\/p>\n
