\n\tTimoth\u00e9e Chalamet has been quiet about \u201cDune: Part Three<\/a>,\u201d which opens in theaters this December. But while speaking with Matthew McConaughey<\/a> at Variety and CNN\u2019s town hall event at the University of Texas at Austin, Chalamet revealed some new details that have inspired his portrayal of Paul Atreides in Denis Villeneuve\u2019s sci-fi trilogy.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhat I think you see at the end of the second one, and across the third one, is yourself in \u2018Interstellar\u2019 and Heath Ledger in \u2018The Dark Knight\u2019 and Marlon Brando in \u2018Apocalypse Now\u2019 and stuff like that,\u201d he said to McConaughey \u2014 before backtracking a bit. \u201cActually, wait, let me rephrase all of that! Hold up. I cannot put myself in that same boat,\u201d he said, laughing. \u201cLet\u2019s just say, it\u2019s these big movies where you could sneak in something. A curveball.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tOscar Isaac, who played Paul\u2019s father Leto Atreides in the first \u201cDune\u201d film, was another inspiration to Chalamet. \u201cHe treated it in a Shakespearean way \u2014 to play it heightened and not really care about it being heightened,\u201d Chalamet said. Watching Isaac encouraged him to take \u201cmore liberty than ever.\u201d On the first \u201cDune\u201d film, \u201cI felt kind of thrown by the futurism,\u201d Chalamet said. \u201cI was coming off \u2018Beautiful Boy\u2019 and \u2018Call Me by Your Name\u2019 and movies that were a lot more naturalistic, and this was a huge movie, so I felt intimidated. But especially on this third one, all the great shit you see on screen is from freedom of movement and freedom of choice. And with Denis, we really had a good rhythm. It\u2019s the eeriest one. It\u2019s a big swing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tChalamet didn\u2019t say much about the plot of the new film, but he did discuss the sci-fi technology. \u201cOn the first \u2018Dune,\u2019 we had an ornithopter sequence that I got a chance to do again in the third, but this time I was way more geared up,\u201d he said. \u201cOn \u2018Dune 3,\u2019 as opposed to the first movie, I came out early and studied the control panel \u2014 all sorts of hieroglyphics and things that aren\u2019t tethered to reality. I wanted to know what each button did, and invent a dynamic for myself with it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tChalamet felt that \u201cthe bat was red-hot\u201d while filming \u201cDune: Part Three\u201d after his roles in \u201cMarty Supreme\u201d and \u201cA Complete Unknown,\u201d which both earned him Oscar nominations for best actor. \u201cI didn\u2019t want to be complacent about a single moment. Everything was sacred, and it was my last time doing a \u2018Dune\u2019 film, so I really wanted to treat it as sacred. Because people can get complacent, but I was more intense on the third one. It felt like that was the natural momentum, so I wanted to push against that as hard as I could.\u201d<\/p>\n
