\n\tAnd the BAFTA<\/a> goes to\u2026 Those words are once again the focus in London Sunday night at the 79th BAFTA Film Awards<\/a> ceremony, hosted by Alan Cumming<\/a>, the presenter and producer of\u00a0The Traitors U.S., at London\u2019s Royal Festival Hall. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe BAFTA nominations<\/a> set up a thrill ride for the British Academy honors, with Paul Thomas Anderson\u2019s political thriller\u00a0One Battle After Another<\/a>\u00a0earning 14 nods,\u00a0narrowly edging out Ryan Coogler\u2019s vampire film\u00a0Sinners<\/a>\u00a0with 13, and Chlo\u00e9 Zhao\u2019s Shakespearean heartbreaker\u00a0Hamnet<\/a><\/a>\u00a0and Josh Safdie\u2019s ping-pong caper\u00a0Marty Supreme<\/a>\u00a0getting 11 nods each.<\/p>\n

\n\tOther top BAFTA nominees include Joachim Trier\u2019s drama\u00a0Sentimental Value<\/a>\u00a0and Guillermo del Toro\u2019s gothic epic\u00a0Frankenstein<\/a>, which earned eight BAFTA noms each, and Yorgos Lanthimos\u2019 black comedy\u00a0Bugonia\u00a0and Kirk Jones\u2019\u00a0Tourette Syndrome advocate dramedy<\/a>\u00a0I Swear\u00a0with five each.<\/p>\n

\n\tFirst-time\u00a0BAFTA nominees in the performance categories\u00a0included\u00a0Robert Aramayo, Odessa\u00a0A\u2019zion, Rose Byrne, Chase Infiniti, Michael B.\u00a0Jordan, Inga\u00a0Ibsdotter\u00a0Lilleaas, Stellan Skarsg\u00e5rd, and Teyana Taylor. <\/p>\n

\n\tI Swear star Aramayo surprised the star-studded crowd with two wins in one night, for Rising Star and leading actor, the latter of which drew audible gasps.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe best supporting acting honors on Sunday went to Wunmi Mosaku for Sinners<\/a> and Sean Penn for One Battle After Another<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\n\tAmong BAFTA nomination records are Zhao\u2019s Hamnet\u00a0as the most-nominated film by a female<\/a> director ever, and Coogler\u2019s Sinners as the most-nominated film<\/a> by a Black director in the British Academy\u2019s history.<\/p>\n

\n\tAt the\u00a0BAFTA Film Awards 2025<\/a>,\u00a0Conclave\u00a0(best film) and\u00a0The Brutalist\u00a0(best director and actor) won four honors each.<\/p>\n

\n\tBAFTA chair Sara Putt opened the festivities Sunday night, lauding this year\u2019s nominees and thanking them for providing audiences with \u201cwindows into other worlds and sometimes, yes, a respite from this one.\u201d And she touted the excellence they have shown, \u201cno algorithms involved.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tA pre-recorded sketch, starring Cumming discussing marketing ideas for the BAFTAs on a video call with Brian Cox, Warwick Davis, Ken Jeong, Jacobi Jupe, Hannah Waddingham, dog LaLa, a muted and video-less Leo DiCaprio and Paddington Bear then opened the entertainment portion of the night.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn his opening monologue, Cumming ran through the topics covered by this year\u2019s nominees. \u201cWhatever happened to escapism? I\u2019m exhausted,\u201d he concluded. \u201cIt\u2019s almost as though, I don\u2019t know, there are events going on in the real world that are influencing filmmakers. Anyone else, like you Americans in particular?\u201d Cumming then invited everyone in attendance to join him in a collective primal scream at world events.<\/p>\n

\n\tDirector David Borenstein accepted the honor for best documentary for his Mr. Nobody Against Putin with another U.S. reference, saying: \u201cNo matter how dark things get, whether in Russia or on the streets of Minneapolis, we always face a moral choice.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAmong other political comments during Sunday\u2019s ceremony, My Father\u2019s Shadow<\/a> director Akinola Davies Jr.<\/a>, who won the Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer\u00a0honor with his writer and brother Wale Davies, ended his acceptance speech with the words, \u201cFree Palestine!\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAlso on Sunday,\u00a0Clare Binns<\/a>, the creative director of\u00a0Picturehouse\u00a0Cinemas and\u00a0Picturehouse Entertainment<\/a>\u00a0and \u201ca driving force in the distribution of films in the U.K.,\u201d was honored with the Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema Award at the ceremony. The world needs more neighborhood cinemas, she told the BAFTA crowd.\u00a0And she lauded the late Robert Redstone for founding the Sundance Institute and Sundance Film Festival, saying:\u00a0\u201cHe knew that above all, we should be prepared to take risks.\u201d<\/p>\n
